The European Union's heath commision released some horrifying, but not very stunning numbers, concerning childhood obesity today: More than 400,000 kids become overweight every year in Europe (!). The numbers for North America is no better. The two leading causes of this epedemic are: poor eating habits combined with a lack of activity. No surprise there either. This can be, in fact, a terribly advanced drawback and not easy to solve. In my humble opinion, here are some key issues to accommodate:
1. Daily activity - we want to encourage kids to be more active. A lot of a lot of active. One key problem is that the means 90% of all kids entertain themselves - Playstation, TV, Movies etc. Instead of this, lets bring back the joy and wonder of outside physical activity. Lets bring our children out into the park, forest, mountains, back-yard, no matter is available. Encourage the wonder and excitement of being outdoors, go exploring within the forest, search for animals, go fishing, skiing, you name it. Any outside acitivity that is fun will teach a young child to like and appreciate what lies outside the thirty five" Panasonic television set. This, I believe, is one in all the most important things we can do to combat the problem. It is important that it's fun and exciting, not a tangle or boring.
2. Phyiscal activity in faculty - for some reason the weekly quantity of phyiscal education in our faculties have dropped. This trend must be reversed. Lets increase the amount several-folds.
3. Sports - when we enroll children in sports, lets concentrate on encouraging and establishing good attitudes towards coaching and living healthy and not focus thus much on specialization at an early age or pressure the kids into performance oriented goals. That may come back later. And, we have a tendency to should face one very important fact: taking your son or daughter twice per week to football (soccer) follow will not fulfill the complete need for physical activity that week. Not even close. Studies have shown that adult-organized activities lead to 70% inactivity in the children. It's a lot of higher to allow them to "run with the ball" and only supervise.
4. Over-Protecting - I understand this can be in all probability easy on behalf of me to mention, since I have no children, however oldsters are a lot of too overprotective of their kids. Take a peek at a median school playground, it can either be utterly away from natural obstacles (trees etc), or if there are any - the branches are all discontinue to stop the children from climbing in it. Some people might say that it is a "punishment" to the child if they can't have a donut and a soft drink, hell no! As I was growing up - I only had soft drinks and candy twice a year (Christmas and New Years). That was it! Was I sad? No, I think I had the best childhood anyone could presumably raise for. I used to be eighteen years previous or so the primary time I had quick-food (coaching camp in Southern Europe). Have good healthy meals, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Which will mean spending additional time cooking, versus ordering a pizza etc, however think of what you are doing for your kid (and yourself). And I am not talking about all these "widespread" diets (Atkins, no-fat and no matter else there is). No, I am talking regarding a simple diet place along with smart, raw products. Also, lets bring vegetables and fruit into our lives.
6. Food in the faculties - Walk into a public college now and take a look at what's obtainable for children to eat. It is superb! How on earth can we tend to let this happen???? Soft drink machines line the walls, vending machines crammed with candy, VERY poor food served within the cafeteria etc. I do not recognize what to say concerning that, alternative than WTF!?
7. As a society we have a tendency to need to create changes - force the colleges to serve sensible food. Remove the poor food things from college property. Increase PE in our colleges, teach youngsters regarding healthy living habits. Let them play outside, whether or not it is a bit cold...
8. And at last - food manufacturers. Have a look at McDonalds for example. What a nice, great promoting plan they have. Happy-meals, toys, a clown as a spokes-man, play-rooms within the resturant, a McDonalds strategically placed shut to pretty much each faculty within the western world and a fantastic ad-campain on each channel that children might watch. Will you get any nearer to a "brain-washing" program? How the heck will presumably a child not wish to eat McDonalds many times per week after all that? And it is not simply McDonalds, they're all doing it. Each different food product on the market is stuffed with unhealthy, un-natural "stuff". Will we / should we have a tendency to as a society enforce what food producers will and cannot market? I don't know. However one issue is for positive, I am scared, terribly scared, of trying to lift a kid during this world. I wish we have a tendency to may get this drawback onto the international agenda more. Forget concerning the flu-pandemic. There is a pandemic occurring right now, and it's obesity.
