Portraiture is what one man is engaged in and his subjects include parakeets, alligators, and a winning black angus and this is not only becoming a highly specialized art business but a successful one as well. He is able to paint a pet flea given a good quality photo of the critter in action. Today, he limits the work he does to dogs, cats, horses, birds, one alligator, and rabbits.
As a growing boy, he found joy in arts and animals. When it comes to supporting a wife and a youngster all artists know that selling fine paintings cannot make for a good living. To the Bay Area is where he moved and he continued studying and aimed for a career in commercial art. As a hobby he engaged in fine art after opening a display business during World War II.
And, as is often the case, it was his wife who suggested that he develop his hobby into a business after he had painted a portrait of a friend's pair of siamese cats, much to everyone's delight, especially the cats, who almost destroyed the painting by rubbing and purring against it. A happy financial result met him as he earnestly entered into the pet portrait painting business.
He launched his most current collection at the cow palace. That prompted a shower of commissions to paint portraits of a champion rabbit, fine show horses, and even a pet parakeet whose owner fondly explained she had raised it from an egg. To make a portrait of his horse was the request he received from a well known television actor singer who was a recording artist. He was especially chosen to paint the winning black angus. For him it is better than painting people portraits and his subjects do not usually kick.
In Santa Clara there is a big university with a new director of the gallery and museum who in San Jose was a former director of a big museum and she assumed the position after a reverend died early last month. This new director is also a well known artist who exhibited through the nation and at the palace of the legion of honor locally.
The works of a local sculptor will be exhibited at a gallery in San Francisco. Thirty works of his covering neo classical to highly abstracted forms will be exhibited in the gallery. A writer, photographer, and highly talented artist are what he is and he also conducts a ballet school. In the movie called spectre of a rose is where he starred. There will be an exhibit displaying more than 200 objects, books, prints, paintings, and sculptures from a private collection and it will be presented in another famous museum.
The collection of a couple from Pennsylvania covers a span of 50 years. It is a collection of scores of other historic greats and the works of a dozen famous painters. Collecting books was a hobby of the husband when he was still a student of Harvard but now he has been able to add many of the more valuable objects to his collection purchasing them on installment.
