Cutting boards are part of culinary and other kitchen activities. One could not complete a palatable meal without using one of them. Medical and health experts maintain that these boards should be kept clean and germ-free with each use, particularly in using it for vegetable and meat. There should be a separate cutting board for meat and vegetables.

Choosing the best cutting board is somewhat confusing with the wide variety of sizes, style and materials. It can be small or large with almost all types of shapes you can imagine. However, the most important thing in choosing the best cutting board is the type of material used in making it.

In the market, you can see different materials such as bamboo, wood, glass, composite, plastic and polypropylene, among others. Each of these materials has its own advantages and disadvantages.

To start with, a wood cutting board is easy on your knives, therefore, you can be assured that your knives are not easily destroyed against the wood. Its high-end boards can be refinished and make it durable. It can also be sanded, and the appearance is attractive. It can also be as sanitary as the plastic.

However, on the other side, a bamboo cutting board must be seasoned periodically. It is not dishwasher safe. Its quality depends on its construction and the type of wood used. Finally, it is prone to scratches and nicks.

Using a bamboo cutting board on your kitchen supports the green movement for sustainable earth as bamboo is a renewable resource. A bamboo plant only requires 3 to 6 years to reach its full growth, making it an eco-friendly resource. It is attractive, durable, easy on your knives, and has natural bacteria-fighting properties.

On the negative side, it is not safe for dishwashing, requires periodic seasoning, and the quality varies as well. If you use a cheap bamboo, it will easily splinter.

Among the disadvantages for the composite cutting boards are the high chances of giving off odor when it is wet, being harder on your knives and not being an eco-friendly. On the bright side, it is safe for dishwashing, easy to clean, attractive and durable. Composite cutting boards are made of fibers that are bound with resin or glue. Sometimes, it comes with a wood laminate top.

Plastic is also easy to clean, dishwasher safe, affordable, and gentle on your knives. The Food and Drug Administration or FDA recommends plastic for your cutting board as it can be more sanitary than wood.

But plastic is not an eco-friendly, not as pretty as the wood and bamboo and prone to scratches and gouges that can harbor bacteria.

The glass cutting boards are believed to be good at dulling out your knives in as quickly as 10 uses. They are also prone to breakage and chips. On the bright side, they are durable, attractive and sanitary.

Choosing the best cutting board for you depends really on your needs and financial resources. How much are you willing to spend for them?
