What one dog psychologist did was prescribe a box turtle in an effort to help a poodle fulfill its maternal instincts. A book entitled understanding your dog was written by him for this is one psychologist who takes his work seriously. Not only is this doctor an associate professor of psychology at local university but also an associate director for research at the local zoo and his book shows how animals are individuals too. He's very honest about expressing himself, but people often presume to know too much.

The husband was not allowed to enter the bedroom by the dog and this was what he said about a young couple. Experiencing catatonic fits when the couple fought was their dachshund and this was written in his book. The body language of dogs is similar to humans as he says and they usually develop like young children. In tolerating closeness, he said that dogs just like humans have different abilities to do so.

Dogs develop through several stages, the doctor points out, adding that the best time to get a puppy is when he is between six and eight weeks old. It is not wise to get a puppy older than 10 weeks unless it has been raised with a lot of people around. A dog's interaction with other puppies is something you should take note of before buying a dog. Actually, a dog that is very outgoing can be the most aggressive out of the bunch.

After investigating it, see if he will play a game of tug of war with an old scarf or a glove that you brought. He says there is no point in discipline training for a puppy at five or six weeks, because he won't remember it, but he says that's a good time for tender, loving care and seeing that the puppy has a lot of different experiences so his environment will be enriched.

He mentions how there is a sensitive fear period at eight weeks wherein owners should avoid any traumatic situations for their puppy including a visit to the doctor. After 12 weeks a dog will then be emotionally bonded to his owner and during this time his spirit and attachment will less likely be broken by discipline training. In terms of considering breeds of dog, this doctor who holds a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university has differing recommendations depending on the given situations.

If a family has children in the house then their best bet would be a golden retriever, when it comes to a young couple terriers work best, a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier, or a poodle will be great for apartment couples, and older couples will find a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese, or pug amazing. Before, one can easily tell the temperament of a dog based on the breed but he says this is no longer possible. He associates this problem with less quality in breeding.

Considering breed standards, he calls dog breeders cranks if they get together and decide on changing these. People should be responsible enough not to change standards without knowing the results, he said. Considering prize dogs, before they are named the best in the breed, there is emphasis today on the necessity of testing. Not having a zombie for a winner is why this is necessary.
