In an effort to help a poodle fulfill its maternal instincts, a dog psychologist ended up prescribing a box turtle. This is one serious psychologist and he even resorted to writing a book about understanding your dog. Explaining how animals are also individuals is the book off this doctor who is an associate professor of psychology at local university and associate director for research at the local zoo. Usually, he expresses himself honestly even if people do presume too much sometimes.

He told on a recent visit here, of a case where a young couple owned a dog and the dog wouldn't let the husband into the bedroom. In his book, he mentioned the couple's dachshund which had a catatonic fit whenever they would fight. He says dogs even develop like young children in many ways, and that their body language is similar to humans. Dogs have various ways of tolerating closeness just like humans, he said.

Dogs normally develop through several stages and this is what the doctor points out so it is advised that getting a puppy is best when it is between six and eight weeks old. When it comes to choosing a puppy older than 10 weeks, see to it that there were a lot of people around when it was raised. Whenever you buy a dog, first see how well it is able to interact with other puppies. Actually, a dog that is very outgoing can be the most aggressive out of the bunch.

Considering taking along an old scarf or a glove and see if he will play a game of tug of war after investigating it. When a puppy is at five or six weeks, there is no need for any discipline training for he will only forget it but he will need some tender loving care as well as an exposure to a number of experiences that will enrich his environment.

There is a sensitive fear period at eight weeks according to him and during this time the owners should be aware enough not to cause any undue trauma for their puppy like a visit to the vet. It will take 12 weeks before the dog will be emotionally bonded to his owner and this is when discipline training will not break his spirit or attachment. A holder of a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university is this doctor and he offers recommendations for dog breeds for people in varying situations.

A family with children is advised to have a golden retriever, young couples will appreciate terriers, any apartment couple would appreciate a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier, or a poodle, older couples will definitely be in good hands with a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese, or pug. Today, he says that it is more difficult to tell the temperament of a dog based solely on the breed. He associates this problem with less quality in breeding.

When it comes to dog breeders who come together and try to make changes in breed standards he calls them cranks. He says that a person who is unaware of the results should not attempt to make changes to standards. Should prize dogs be named the best in the breed, what is being emphasized today is how they should first be subjected to testing. This is to make sure that the winning dog is no zombie.
