The Poodle is often assumed to be a French breed, but the breed actually came from Germany, where it was used as a water retriever. The breed is ranked the second most intelligent breed of dogs.
Standard, Miniature and Toy: The 3 Types of Poodle
The Standard Poodle type was used as a retriever; it is approximately 15 inches and weighs 20lbs. The Miniature's, height is 10 to 15 inches, weighing between 12 and 20lbs. The Toy's height is 10 inches and weighs 12lbs.
The Standard Poodle was designed as a working dog, the Miniature and Toy as pets and show dogs. Today, the Miniature and Toy Poodles are ideal for owners who live in apartments.
Most pet Poodles will not have the extravagant and elaborate clips that the Poodle is famous for, but as a family pet, the Poodle looks a lot less fancy.
Advantages of a Poodle
The Poodle is a very intelligent breed of dog, so it is easy and fun to train.
Poodles can be quite lazy creatures; hence do not require a large yard to play in.
Poodles are known by some as 'hypoallergenic dogs'. The Poodle does not shed copiously and many pet allergy sufferers find them advantageous.
The Poodle is a very gentle breed of dog, which is loyal, loving and affectionate. They enjoy the company of children and, typically, other animals.
Disadvantages of Poodles
High maintenance: They need to be bathed and groomed regularly.
The breed's nails grow very rapidly; hence need to be trimmed at least once every two or three weeks.
It is genetically susceptible to a number of illnesses. It is wise to research to avoid the onset of these problems.
For centuries, Poodles have been a popular pet due to their unusual appearance, loving personality and sharp minds.
