Portrait photography is a traditional art form that is undergoing reevaluation. One artist's work is motivated by his reaction toward portraiture's traditional confrontational character. The smile please hold it thanks good bye technique to taking photographs resulted in output that did not satisfy this photographer.

He has a point here. There is a certain dullness in the media portraiture profession that people may not realize. The subjects of the photography simply take on poses for unexpected settings when the photographer tells them to do so.

In order to remove the monotony in this type of work, his idea is to involve the sitter in a more extensive manner. The 13 portraits of the people living in the city of Pittsburgh was the result of a collaborative effort. The sitter can give a number of suggestions and even choose the place where she wants to be photographed. In this profession, this is something that some may not be used to.

According to the artist, there is no project that is preconceived. A preliminary meeting is needed to work out the general concept of the photograph. Aided by the sitter, the artist then looks for a suitable site. Sometimes a set is constructed, and it is usually made with a steel sheet and mirrored glass box to create a confined cell.

One sculptor chose to be photographed with his own work, and a writer chose the scenario of the bar. While using bridges was suggested as a possible site, when the actual photograph was taken, it didn't look like a very essential detail.

It is impressive how he is able to create such astonishing lighting effects in the photographs he takes. These were not done during the developing and printing of the pictures. Using colored gels with the lighting equipment allows him to create attractive color effects. The exposure times for these photographs are lengthy, almost Victorian, in duration. It took 15 minutes to expose the nocturnal portrait of person outside a bar, giving the sitter enough time to walk into and out of the camera's range.

Afterwards, he could show up again with a wand of light and trace letters in the air which can be recorded by the camera. Hardly anything in the film could indicate any person's presence in the bar during the exposure. You would notice in the photographs taken in the garden of a factory how the lighting produces such simplicity amidst all the chromatic luxury.

It's curious to note that while he just taught himself photography, he is very professional about how he does his work. Collaboration becomes a challenge for him because he seems to have this desire to dictate what he wants over his work. Of course, the final decisions have to be those of the artist, and this exhibition makes that clear. The photographs, being reversal prints, have all been professionally printed.
