There are six local artists and they will demonstrate their individual approaches to animal painting in a program that a museum is holding in conjunction with its animal friends exhibit. Each one of the artists is required to create an animal theme painting in the museum galleries and then tell the visitors what style and techniques they used to capture the image and spirit of the animals in the paintings. According to the executive director of the museum, there is special meaning in animals for people of different cultures and backgrounds.

A dove works as a sign of peace and buffalos are more of a spiritual symbol. A good omen can be associated with a red tailed hawk while dogs signify cherished friends. All over the world, animals continue to be the favorites because since the beginning of time from petroglyphs to cave murals to oil paintings to jewelry they have been the subjects of artistic endeavor.

From this female artist came her personal definition as an avid explorer of styles, techniques, and ideas. The methods she used were developed over in workshop presentations, consulting, publications, and a long career of teaching. Besides being a founding member of a local society of watercolorists she is also in the west's who's who.

There was another female artist who was originally from southern California and before moving to her hometown in 1983 she took up art and watercolor. When it comes to the themes she was working with, these involve landscapes and floral studies plus people and animal portraits. Other than resulting from her aggressive use of pigment, the director said that her style also results from her ability to push the watercolor medium into works of unusual size without sacrificing the brilliance of transparent watercolor.

There is one artist who studied at a famous college and at the art center of college of design in Los Angeles. In Chicago, he worked as a graphic designer but he has firsthand experience in national exhibits including the national watercolor exhibition in environment. When it comes to the presentations and publications each of the artists will be making, these will be in Springfield, Illinois and local and regional venues.

There was a period of study at the University of California in Los Angeles for the fourth artist following a graduation with high honors from New York's school of art. She received an award for the best of show at Washington school of art's 12th annual competition. Able to give a precious glimpse of human drama is how her work was described by a reviewer considering how it is full of psychological poignancy as parts of a famous director's film.

Actually, the fifth artist earned her painting degree from Kansas university school of fine arts. She paints in her own interpretive style of realism, giving the viewer a feeling of the atmosphere and mood of the subject. The artist has participated in the Kansas landscape which is a traveling exhibition shown at the Smithsonian institution in Washington, DC not to mention in juried exhibitions and a number of one person shows.

The sixth artist culminated her study of art and refinement of painting skills with eight years study of Chinese brush painting with a noted Chinese painter. Considering this style of painting, lifted or erased during creation, she adapted it to the northern New Mexican environment. The director of the museum stated that they are honored to welcome these distinguished artists from the society of watercolorists to the museum, and to reiterate their commitment to artists and designers working showing up.

For the pleasure of audiences both young and old is the current animal friends exhibition which has been specially selected. This will be a workshop visitors will enjoy as the artists create portraits of their own special animal friends. 1992 was when the society of watercolorists was founded which has a mission to encourage the local and national production not to mention appreciation of professional quality watercolors.
