If you're moving to Atlanta, Georgia, one of the most important things you may want to do is to get to know Atlantas various neighborhoods. One of the most popular neighborhoods in Atlanta is Buckhead. If you're not already familiar with Buckhead, this article will serve as a general overview of the area.
Why people like Buckhead
Buckhead is a sought-after place of residence for many reasons, not the least of which is its location. Buckhead is situated inside of I-285, the loop that encircles Atlanta, known to locals as "The Perimeter". Buckheads close-in location -- directly north of Midtown and just 5 miles north of downtown -- makes it convenient to the central business district.
Another reason Buckhead is popular with home buyers is the number of excellent schools in the area. Some of the most highly rated public elementary schools in Buckhead include Sarah Smith, Warren T. Jackson, Morris Brandon, and E. Rivers. There are also a number of exceptional private schools in Buckhead, such as The Atlanta International School, Westminster, Lovett and Pace Academy.,
What's up with that name?
It's not uncommon for newcomers to ask how Buckhead got it's name. In fact, many long-time residents don't even know. I've heard several locals hazard a guess at it. One person claimed that Buckhead was named after a particular high-rise office building which, of course, was built more than a century after Buckhead got it's distinctive name. Another person told me it's due to the shape formed by I-75 and I-85 as they diverge and surround Buckhead. They do form an informal border of the area, but Buckhead was named decades before the interstates were built.
The truth is that in the 1830s, there was a general store and pub which became a popular stopping point for travelers in the area. The owner mounted the head of a large dear at a conspicuous location by the store, and soon people began referring the location as "buck head." Before long, the whole area became known as Buckhead, and the name stuck.
In more recent history, a taxpayer group fighting high property taxes proposed that Buckhead secede from the city of Atlanta and create it's own city. Buckhead's neighbor to the north, Sandy Springs, did just that a few years previous. Of course, there already is a city of Buckhead in Georgia, located about 100 miles east of Atlanta. At this writing, the Buckhead neighborhood remains a part of Atlanta.
Residential Houses
Buckhead itself is comprised of more than a couple dozen smaller neighborhoods of single-family homes. The original homes in many of these neighborhoods date from the 1920s through the 1940s, though many renovations and new construction infill housing is extensive throughout the area. Although Buckhead has the reputation of an affluent area with homes topping $10 million, there are also houses for sale in some Buckhead neighborhoods starting from the $200,000's.
Residential Condos
Though many Buckhead neighborhoods are exclusively single-family, others have condos and townhouses within their boundaries. There are also several high-rise condos, most of which are located along Peachtree Road, Buckhead's main artery. Condo prices run a wide spectrum, starting from under $100,000 to multi-million-dollar units.
Hopefully this overview has helped you get acquainted with Buckhead. Maybe one day you too will call Buckhead home.
