A lanyard is a cord or rope typically placed around the neck or wrist. Its function is to clutch something especially where there is a chance of losing it or to make sure it can be visible all the time.

These were originally used in the military to tie a pistol, sword or whistle to the soldier's uniform. These were used in instances where there was a possibility of dropping the object off, or misplacing it at some other place. A well made pistol with this cord can be easily removed and reattached, but otherwise will stay connected to the pistol whether it is drawn or in a holster.

With different color blends and design patterns, these were likewise commonly worn on the shoulders of military uniforms to showcase the officer's rank, qualification, or particular affiliation in the armed forces. Many of these regiments used to place them on the left, so as to let the soldier easily blow his whistle from the left pocket while still keeping in contact with the others.

Used regularly in companies for name badges are simple ones made of braided cloth with a clip attached to the end. The common setup is by placing a pocket with one clear side to the lanyard, with the user's name badge facing front and at times items like pens or tools are kept behind the badge so that it will be very easy to access. These can sometimes be used as key chain or key holder, particularly in times where the keys can be easily lost or misplaced.

Nowadays, these are conveniently used with hip devices like MP3 players and USB flash drives so as not to lose or drop it off. The Wii Remote wrist strap is a type of yard too. It keeps the device fastened with the player's upper arm while the player is busy doing his thing.

And, of course, lanyards are usually made use to display badges, tickets or identification cards. Thus, these are very useful in public places like schools, hospitals, and in public affairs like assemblies, forums, and concerts.
