When it comes to simple, effective, affordable, and time-tested marketing tool, the business card is what you are looking for. This humble card can be relied on effectively communicating details about you and your products and services. But because business cards are so common these days, many business owners simply take their importance and function for granted. This is an expensive mistake that can bring you to downfall. With a little planning, you can easily make your business card pay big.

If seriously considering making your own business cards today, here are things you need to keep in mind:

• The business card is your face. When meeting new customers, your business card serve as the face of your business. It tells a lot about you and your business. So, it is crucial that you create a smart and compelling business card that tells the entire market that you offer the best product or service in town. A good rule to follow here is to collect business cards and study what made these cards compelling. Browse through your collection and sort out the ones that leave a good impression and those that don’t. Study them, make a list of the good elements and from there you can determine the best design appropriate for your own business card.

• Create attractive cards but don’t overdo it. Creativity is good, but only to a certain extent. When it comes to designing cards, it’s easy to get carried away. Because you want to make your cards look exceptional good and with the creative juices you have in your system, you want put lots of creative ideas in your cards. But remember that too much of something is no longer good. So, be sure to apply only enough creativity in designing your business cards. A good rule of thumb to follow is to stick only with what works. You can always use good colors and images, but be sure to stick with the standard rule. Don’t use oversized and extra lightweight cards as they don’t reflect a creative and reliable image for you.

• Keep your information short but complete. Not all people have all the time in the world to read your card. So as much as possible be concise in detailing your business information. Don’t beat around the bush. Remember that you only have limited space with which to print your detail. Keep it short, but present complete information as much as possible. You would not want people to lose interest in you simply because they can’t contact you in the numbers you have printed in your card. So, be very careful in presenting your complete information in your business card templates.

• Practice good business card exchange. There is actually no right and wrong way to give and receive business cards. It is all right to ask for the business card of someone you met, but make sure that you offered your card first. However, don’t just give your card to anyone you meet. Make sure the person is interested enough in your business before giving your card. But if the person you are talking to is higher in rank compared to you, say he is a business executive or a CEO, then you should wait for him to give you his card.
