From an experience in hanging pictures lasting for years comes several rules. As much as possible refrain from hanging pictures on every single wall unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery and keep in mind that hanging a picture is best when a wall appears to be bare without it. With regard to hanging pictures you can do so over a sofa, in groups, over a server, a small pier table, or a console.
But here's another rule. When there is furniture underneath do not make the groupings wider than this. If you want to give a unified look to a wall, hang the pictures close together, especially if they're of varying sizes. When it comes to type and size you may have a prized collection of bird prints with different frames. You should never hang them frame by frame but in pleasing geometrics instead.
There is a third rule. What the wall does as a frame is to serve to set off a group of pictures on all four sides even with pictures hung in close proximity. Should you consider pleasing geometry you should arrange the pictures to look like a square or a rectangle afterwards. If what you have with you are four pictures all framed alike and of the same size you should try hanging them vertically above a small step table, geometrically in a square over the sofa, or in a straight line over a long table. For staircases the step pattern in hanging pictures should be used. When it comes to the best pattern it is a straight line meeting at right angles. There is always room for a little regimentation every now and then.
You may be one of those who have been able to accumulate a collection of pictures over a lifetime including old family portraits, originals, prints, and reproductions.
