Most of the recent press about security has been driven at virus protection. It is also being discussed how advanced PC users should take additional precautions to safeguard their systems if they access certain sites. What we are referring to here is advanced User ID and Password selection and things like Firewalls. We will review these in detail but we also do not want to ignore some of the more boring housekeeping issues that contribute greatly to having a system that is operationally tight and clean. This means keeping your system free from data redundancy.
Let us consider redundancy for our first review topic. Every user of every PC regularly produces - as a byproduct of operation - a ton of redundant, renamed, and otherwise data waste that is typically left on their system. While it is certainly not the kind of thing that you want to stop your operation to take care of, this kind of redundancy can really clog your system, fill up hard drives, cause mistaken file selection scenarios and, hence, wasted time and generally reduce your overall productivity. When time permits you should definitely delete all these kinds of files. As these deletions occur you should then defrag and condense directories and drives. While not flashy this is the technology version of keeping a clean and tidy workbench.
Secondly is the issue of application version control. Many times users will run either out of support applications or even multiple versions of the same application. As an example, if you are running Office 2000 to allow the continued use of FrontPage while you are also running the full Office 2007 family, you are creating more problems than you may be preventing. You are much better off making the conversion from FrontPage to another premier web authoring package and then run only Office 2007 - the current office version.
Finally, clean up your drivers. While not a high priority item it is generally true that a three year old PC has six printer drivers but only runs one printer. Printer replacement is the typical reason. While the redundant drivers do not rob you of much disk space they are redundant and unnecessary.
Obviously you should also run a top level virus protection package in real time. Similarly you should keep a clean and regularly maintained system registry. You can get good registry software that does all the scan and delete functions automatically and most do not require you to select what needs to be deleted or replaced. They also do other registry fix functions that accomplish the needed Registry Repair.
