We all want to save money, and that includes anything having to do with computers. Naturally this means getting a great deal on a new PC but it also means getting all than an older PC has to give. There are plenty of reasons to run an older PC besides saving on its replacement. As an example, even though I have a room full of new Dell PCs, I also run an older Dell that has the XP operating system running on it. I do this solely because I am my own graphic artist and a decades-old user of PageMaker and, since I have chosen not to convert all my files and go to the Adobe replacement application called InDesign I must continue to run this older PC because PageMaker7 is not supported and will not launch on Vista or Windows7. Therefore I must run the XP system indefinitely.
If you run a system for similar reasons you will ultimately face these kinds of issues and you will need to work around them. The primary issue is not simply age but lack of compatibility in regard to everything installed on the older PC and its needed, eventual replacement. Most of the replacement products - whether hardware or software - released since Windows7 cannot run on XP. You may even have specific hardware replacement problems. Not being able to get the right hard drive, as an example, may necessitate the use of USB-connected externals.
You may also need to use third-party utilities for file conversion. In my previously stated example involving Adobe, I have to use a third-party PDF creating utility due to these same issues.
Then there is the multitude of file type issues that you will need to deal with. As an example, a docx document created in Vista is not readable by Word that is native to XP - again, necessitating a third-party conversion.
Then there are the internet connectivity issues that cannot be avoided in an out-of-date PC that still needs access to the net. While this is very frustrating, you will have to get used to dealing with it - or convert data and applications and buy a new PC.
Finally, there are a host of other compatibility issues - mostly created or exacerbated by internet usage - that will continue to plague your use of an older PC.
You will also be really dancing between the raindrops as regards redundant and inaccessible code keys on your system registry so you must keep it very clean. You can get high-quality registry software that performs the registry fix functions and necessary Registry Repair.
Many of these issues are more annoyance than anything else but they will cause you to review daily your decision to keep running the aging PC.
