To be honest, I had known no other careers other than my slightly over a decade pharmaceutical sales careers. Yes, I have changed companies but my role is basically the same. As I mature in the industry over the years, I observe a thing or two about this career which could not be found elsewhere.
Here is the disclaimer though: What I am presenting here is true in my situation but I could not say the same to you. So the benefits I am about to disclose are not typical.
1. Relatively High Entry Level Salary
I once read a report that said the salary for a pharmaceutical sales rep is 11 higher than any other job posting across the country. And that statement is partially correct because it did not mention ‘entry level’ sales rep. Those days back home, if they compare a new pharmaceutical sales rep and a new executive for an established Oil and Gas company, the statement would not hold true.
But on average, entry level pharmaceutical sales rep got paid higher than any other industry.
2. Lucrative Total Remuneration and Package
I can personally attest to this. In the financial year 2006, the total incentive I bring home was more than my total takes home pay. Like I alluded earlier, results are not typical but the point is; it is possible.
3. Fairly Open Competition
Selling for Pharmaceutical Companies is a level playing field. In my 12 years of riding the ups and downs in this industry, I often see that the best paid sales rep, the highest earner, and star performer is not always the one with the highest grade in Science School.
In fact, in my previous employment, the best sales rep for our sector was a teller in one of the local bank!
4. Valuable Training
If you do not make so much money and you could not retire after working for 3 years, I trust that you have better equipped yourself to take on any corporate world. I try not to boast about this but if you know how to sell for a Pharmaceutical company, high chance that you can sell for other industries with relatively much ease.
5. Long Term Career Prospect
If you know how to play your card right, you would not have to carry big detailing bags and beg for sales your entire career. I was promoted to a Sales Manager post after 4 years working in the industry.
6. Continuous Stream of Income
Even if your current company goes belly off and you lose your job, the opportunity for you to land on another possible better company and better job position is abundant. As long as you have required the right sets of skills, sound industry knowledge and the right attitude that lucrative job is just lurking around the corner or to borrow a famous management parable: ‘If they move your cheese, you move with it.’
These are big benefits you might enjoy when you join pharmaceuticals sales careers. Your results might vary but they would not be far from what is listed here. If you ever consider making a career shift, these benefits are something to think about when looking for that next career.
