Sariska National Park: Wildlife to Treasure

Sariska National Park is located at the Alwar District of Rajasthan state. The park sprawls an 800 square kilometers on the Aravali hill. This park comprises of a tiger reserve sanctuary and nature preserves. Sariska is an ideal place for those who love wildlife adventures.

History

The park was under the Project Tiger in 1979. It became a national park in 1982. There were historical monuments and ruins that show a symbolic past of Sariska.

Reports in 2004 stated that there were no tigers being sighted in the reserve because of the growing population of people in around the park. The Rajasthan Forest department and the Project Tiger directorate made an emergency tiger census in January 2005. They found out that there no tigers left.

Tiger relocation started in 2006 by the Indian government. The Wildlife Institute of India helped relocate five adult tigers from Ranthambore National Park. Now, the park continues to relocate tigers. It is the very first tiger relocation in the world.

Topography and Climate
Sariska contain hills and valleys of the Aravali range. It is divided into dry deciduous and scrub thorn arid forests as well as rocks, sheer cliffs and grasses.

The park’s climate is very unpredictable. Summer months are very hot and dry, while winter is at 31 degrees Celsius. July to September is the months for monsoon rains. Best season to visit is from November to June.
Highlights

Sariska National Park accommodates many wildlife species including carnivores like Leopard, Jungle Cat, Jackal, Wild Dog, and Tigers. There are also prey species such as Nilgai, Sambar, Chausingha and Chitel. Talvriksh has a large population of rhesus Monkeys.

The park also represents a rich avian world. It includes harbor quail, peafowl, golden backed woodpeckers and crested serpent. The 17th century castle at Kankawari has a view of flying eagles and vultures. Other animals include crocodiles at the Siliserh Lake as well as monkeys and langurs.

Flora
Ninety percent of the area is covered with dhok trees. Lannea coromandelica and Boswellia serreta grows at the rocky patches, while Acacia Catechu and bamboos are in the valleys. There are tree species like Gugal, Arjun, Bahera, Kadaya and Amla.

You can visit Sariska Palace which was converted into a heritage hotel. Jeep Safaris is a nice way in exploring the reserve while enjoying the natural beauty of the park. It is an excellent opportunity for wildlife photography. Other nearby attractions includes the Kankwari Fort and The Ancient Shiva Temples. Kankwari is a historical structure where Emperor Aurangzeb imprisoned his brother named Dara Shikoh. Neelkanth is one of the Shiva temples dated back 6th to 13th AD.

Accommodations

The park has all types of accommodations to offer. There is an array of choices from royal residences to forest lodges. These include the Upmarket Sariska Palace, RTDC Tiger Den Tourist Bungalow, Hotel Lake Palace and Siliserh Palace Hotel. Some of the rest houses and hotels provide the best of Continental and Indian cuisines.

Transportation

You can access the Alwar town and have a four hour drive from Delhi plus a three hour drive from Jaipur. Reserve buses are available from Alwar, Jaipur and Delhi. Also, you can hire a private car and jeeps to get into Sariska.

New Initiatives

The management of the park is pursuing the relocation of the villages at the reserve core. There are eco restorations on going for the degraded hills and ground development in the marginal area. This will meet the fuel, wood and food of the local inhabitants. Another initiative is the environment educational awareness for the children. Committees, squad and patrolling are available for wildlife enforcement.
