There is no doubt about it, modern furniture is colourful, practical and looks fine in the right surroundings. But in older style houses, something that fit perfectly before, suddenly seems to stick out like a sore thumb; as I noticed when I moved to an older style house a few months ago. I was desperate to change certain modern pieces as quickly as possible as my sitting room just looked a mess.
The odd thing is, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted my new look to be, just that I wanted something classical and elegant. I planned to make my first project the sitting room - the hub of the house. It had become such a hotchpotch of tastes and styles from different eras and I just wanted to draw it all together to create harmony and cohesion.
It occurred to me that auctions or house sales might be the best place to start and while I was checking what existed in the area, I happened across the Newby House Interiors website. They make reproduction antique furniture to what appeared to be a very high standard, so I thought I’d look a bit more closely at the site.
I was very impressed by what I saw. The site was really well illustrated and easy to navigate so after a few clicks I was already adding items to the wish list facility to come back to later. I needed seating primarily and there was such a great choice to select from that I had a bit of dilemma. However I kept coming back to the Savona settee, partly because I couldn’t believe the price but mostly because it was exactly the style I wanted. It was upholstered in faux suede with cabriole legs and just screamed out comfort and elegance to me. I could have chosen my own upholstery, but I liked the diamond pattern one shown very much.
Now I could start to visualise my room taking shape, it was easier to look for other items to pull it together. I saw a tall, reproduction showcase cabinet with drawers and doors that would match the sofa beautifully and help me to display some of my antique collectables in style. After that I found a matching bow fronted reproduction chest (which I planned to use as a sideboard) with a flame veneer that really brought it to life. If the match wasn’t perfect, it didn’t matter at all as the company has a matching service to ensure the finishes match closely.
With the prices being so good, it meant I could actually buy something for the dining room as well. I wanted something like the showcase cabinet but more like a dresser. I planned to store glassware in the top and crockery, plate and tableware beneath. (I inherited quite a lot of silverware and really need to keep it properly stored as I hate all the polishing). I found exactly what I wanted in a 48 inch wall unit - cut panels to the top half and drawers and cupboards beneath. It looks like it will match my dining suite perfectly, but the firm has a matching service anyway, so I’m guaranteed a perfect matching finish.
You could really see from the quality and finish of all these items that they were built by craftsmen and watching the YouTube video links from the site gave me a better opportunity to examine the craftsmanship in detail. That filled me with confidence about my choices.
I was so glad I found that site. My family thought I’d gone a bit mad at first, and then when they saw my makeover they accused me of calling in one of those TV designer teams to do the work!. You don’t have to be an interior designer to know what will work when you have that kind of choice available. If you don’t believe me, I’d recommend you take a look for yourself
