As a professional roofer here in the Atlanta area, I naturally think about roofs a lot. Now, if you have a roof over your head that is properly installed and of the correct material, you probably don t have to think about your roof at all. It s probably only when yours fails that you start to think about your roofing, and that is how it should be. A properly installed shingle made of the right materials should give you years, if not decades of worry free service.

I think it would be nice for everyone to stop and think about their roof for a just a second. We know it is important because it is our first line of defense against the elements. Storms, rain, wind, the hot sun, snow, hail, and ice are all kept at bay by our roof. Put up four walls and no top and you don t really have a shelter, do you? Put up a roof on four poles and you would stand half a chance against nature. Makes you appreciate your roof a little more, eh?

Because we ask and get so much out of our roofs, they are bound to break down eventually. Since they are taking the beating from the weather for us, they are going to break down from UV rays and the cold and ice. Time takes it toll! In the interest of keeping a solid roof over our heads, let s talk about some things we need to watch out for.

Many problems or potential problems can be spotted without going up there. For safety sake, save that for the professionals. Some things you can spot from the ground easily:

Cracked shingles This can be caused by faulty shingles or even improper installation. Cheaper shingles are more prone to cracking and tearing. Don t skimp on materials when having a replacement.

Curling shingles – curling and cupping of shingles are sure sign of age and natural wear. When you can see a lot of this going on it is time to get a roof contractor out to look at it.

Algae – Algae, moss, fungus and lichens growing on top of your home is usually seen where there is less sunlight. It doesn t look good but it poses another problem. Lichens and such hold moisture against the shingles, speeding up the aging process and taking years off the life expectancy of your roof.

If you can see any of these problems from the ground, call a reputable local roofer. Of course, inside problems are easy to spot. If you notice any water stains in your ceilings, no matter how small, call a pro. It may just be a simple repair or patch to stop any further damage. Any reputable roof company will be to show and explain to you any potential problems. If you don t hear a reasonable explanation for your issues, contact another contractor. I hope you appreciate all the protection your roof gives you!
