In my younger days I made a big error, not having any insurance. Let me tell you my tale of woe. I bought a flat when I was only twenty, not bad at that age, don’t you think? It was ideal, in a great area with fantastic views of the sea. I had it decorated by professionals and chose the furniture myself, it looked absolutely stunning.
Even at that young age I was always business minded. On leaving school I worked part-time in a florist’s and decided to buy my own shop. It wasn’t too far away from my flat allowing me to nip back home during my lunch hour for a quick snack. Everything seemed hunky dory, business was good and I was so proud of my achievements.
The feeling of Monday blues certainly hit me one Monday in March last year. From having good fortune my luck changed dramatically in one day. Closed the business and as normal went back home to grab a meal during my lunch hour. Walked into the flat and was totally shocked at what I saw. The flat had been burgled. Every room was trashed, a lot of personal belongings missing including a substantial amount of cash stolen. Shock wasn’t the word, I was extremely upset and called the police.
The cops came round in no time at all. One of them, a sergeant I think, asked if I was insured. When I said no, he was mortified. With a shake of his head he said what an idiot I was. I must admit he was right. Buying the flat and running the business had meant that I had completely forgotten about insurance policies.
I had absolutely nothing, no house and contents insurance or even business insurance. So stupid of me really, I am normally level-headed and sensible. After the police had gone I sat in my flat and thought about how important insurance is. The sergeant said I had virtually no chance of recovering my personal possessions and could say goodbye to the cash, money which I needed for the future.
I began to read about insurance online and didn’t realise how many different types there were. Being young I had never thought of life insurance, however after reading about it, I was certainly going to have to put that right. I didn’t have a car but I did know by law that you had to have car insurance.
My goal had been to save enough money to enjoy a fabulous holiday with friends. Again I hadn’t realised you could take our travel insurance to cover any mishaps while on vacation. I fully intend to do this along with insuring my house and contents, as well as my florist shop. Reading about shop insurance, I was really surprised by how much it covers and how cheap it is.
Now I have everything completely insured. I’ve learned my lesson, are you fully insured?
