Downsizing is a common type of move that people make. This occurs for a variety of reasons. Sometimes a couple has raised their children and find their current home to be too much to care for and too large for them. They may need something that is all on one level as well for them to move around easier.

Others have to move to a smaller home for financial reasons. They may have lost their job or gotten hurt. They may have gotten divorced and making ends meet on their own is harder. Moving to a new area could mean the cost of living is more. Then you are able to buy less of a home with the funding you have.

Regardless of the reason, there are things you can do to make the process much easier on yourself. If you will be moving to a smaller home than you have right now, it can be very stressful. You may be asking yourself where you are going to put everything. Perhaps you aren’t happy about the move at all.

Coming to terms with the situation is the first order of action. Realistically, do you see the downsizing as a temporary situation or as one that is long term? When it is a temporary situation, you have hopes of moving to a larger home again in the future. You may want to consider placing furniture and other items you will use in that larger home in storage.

That cost can add up fast though when you are paying for a storage facility month after month. If you can find a friend or a family member with additional room where you can keep your items that will be best. You can even offer to pay them a bit of money, but less than what a storage unit costs.

If the movement into a smaller home though is permanent, then you will need to take an inventory of what you want to keep. This could be your essential items, family heirlooms, and those that are of sentimental value to you. Start going through your items early so you won’t be overwhelmed by the task.

Before you pack anything to move to your new home, ask yourself a few questions about them. If they are items you haven’t worn or used for several months then you really should find a new home for them. You can give items away, sell them in a yard sale, or donate them.

Being selective as you go through the items you have is important. It will significantly reduce the amount of items you have to put away in your smaller home. Items you do want to keep but not display can go in large storage tubs. If you won’t have much room for them in your new place, get those that are thin and wide. They can slide under beds and other furniture.

When you are finding a smaller place, make sure you evaluate the amount of storage space you will have. Realistically, there are going to be items you need to store and you don’t want to be stressed out about them. For example, what are you going to do with holiday decorations if your new place doesn’t have a shed or a garage?

If you are buying the smaller residence, buying a storage shed kit that you can erect on your own outdoors can help with that situation. They are very affordable and you can buy them in a variety of different sizes. Moving into a smaller home can be comfortable as well as affordable. Once you know what to take and what to get rid of you can feel better about the room you will have to work with.
