A lot of companies hold occasional trainings or seminars for their employees. The do this often so that their employees will be updated of any new project or any new rules and guidelines in handling work. During their training, they will be fed information on how to do things a particular way. After this, they will become more knowledgeable about the job, and do it as to how it is supposed to be done. Although a lot of people may get it the first time, there will be other people who have understood only a partial of the whole seminar, or probably did not understand anything at all. When this happens, coaching becomes a very important factor.
Employee coaching is very important because through this, the employees are kept on track. There will definitely times wherein the workers won't know what to do next or how to handle their work right. Coaches come in to guide the employees to improve their performance and they do this in a strategic manner. They don't just scream at the workers the way some coaches do in sports. They handle things quite differently. Through performance coaching, the employees working habits are analyzed and they are given feedback. From this, they are aided by the coaches to develop which areas need improvement.
When coaching, you can't just go ahead and blurt out the worker's mistakes right away. You have to think clearly first of what that person is doing wrong. You have to analyze whether he isn't doing the job right or if he is showing no interest in doing the job. Those are two different things and going for the same approach to either of the problems will not be very effective.
To become an effective coach, he or she should possess qualities which do not dictate but pull out realizations from the people they are coaching. Another trait a great coach possesses is the ability to set goals and have the determination to meet them. A good coach also knows how to listen. If the coach knows how to listen, he or she will be able to identify the problems which hinder the worker to work well and could come up with particular interventions to take care of the specific problems. It would also help if the coach could empathize with the worker, but keep professionalism while you're at it.
With the right coaching attitude, you would not only be helping other people become better workers, but you will also be earning the respect of other people which, in turn, will make them listen to your opinions. Just remember that in doing this job, you have to be professional in dealing with the employees yet never forget to think with your heart, along with the mind.
