Unlike the typical electrical outlets, the GFCI outlets offer you an additional safety feature that prevents you from hazardous electrical shocks. Hence incorporation of such outlets is a necessity as far as rendering a sound safety schema to your home is concerned.

Once the GFCI outlets are installed, it becomes obligatory to undertake regular inspections of these devices under the supervision of a professional.

A GFCI outlet is an electrical device that monitors the current balance between the active (hot) wire and the neutral wire. Once an aberration is noticed from the predefined value of current, a ground fault is said to have occurred and the circuit immediately trips off. In addition, the devices or the outlets falling after the GFCI outlet in the common circuit also notice a breakdown.

The GFCI outlets normally come with two buttons on it's face. These two buttons make the maintenance task very simple and effective. One of them is a 'test' button that checks or examines the normal operation of the outlet. Pressing the 'test' button trips off the outlet and cuts short the supply to the other devices in the circuit as well.

If the 'preset' button fails to do the required job then take a note of the voltage being received by the GFCI circuit from the main power supply of the home. In that case, wait for sometime until the voltage gets back to it's normal value.

Apart from the problems of 'preset' function, the GFCI receptacles may trip due to the faulty appliances or items plugged into the outlet as well. Such items must be replaced with immediate effect to ensure smooth functioning of the GFCI outlets.

If all else fails then move to the internal wiring setup of the GFCI outlet to explore the cause of the problem. Make sure that the supervision and guidance of an expert is in tact throughout the project.

Always keep an electrician in tact to supervise you with the repair and maintenance work of the GFCI outlets.
