Your room looks picture perfect - a shelf lined with books, windows with impressive drapes, a cozy sofa set, a coffee table accessorized with cute knick-knacks, beautiful artworks and interesting photos. You even have an aquarium. But it's not complete. It wouldn't be, unless you add a pretty rug to the picture.

Rugs are great means to beautify a room and to match all the other existing decorative items. They add character and a semblance of the mood you want to convey. It's all about strategic placing, buddy. Putting your rug in the right place can do its magic trick. Read on and learn a thing or two on how to maximize proper placement.

Color, patterns and the texture of a rug are subjective issues as they depend on personal taste and preferences. There are no firm rules, but there are ways to place certain rugs to best effect. Smaller rugs can be placed anywhere but since large rugs often define the appearance and style of a room, it is essential to follow some guidelines while placing it.

In placing a rug under a coffee table or a sofa, have two to three inches of space behind the table or the sofa's front area and have the back legs on the floor. If you have a big rug, placing the entire table or sofa on the rug is the way to go.

Choosing the right size for your rug is a vital point. Measure your desired space so you'll know which rug has the accurate size. A too big or too small rug will not do. It messes up the whole interior aspect.

Purchase a rug that has eight inches of extra space for the bare floor. You're not looking at wall-to-wall carpeting, so no need to go overtly excited in covering the entire flooring.

For furniture like the dining set, a large rug is necessary to have a coordinated look. It should have twenty-four inches of space past the table's edges. This gives room for the chairs to fit in as well.

A rug sized 4 X 6 feet, 5 X 8 feet, or 5 to 7 feet with a round or hexagonal shape is good for defining a seating area in a large room. Arrange the chairs in such a manner so that you don't have more than two feet of rug behind the chairs.

Buying a large rug requires more careful thought because of its size. You have to be certain that it will be right for the room. Plan and choose and carefully.

My rugs are now adorning rooms in my apartment and I love how they look. I admire too my friend's rugs and how they enhance her place. Placing rugs correctly can truly help you achieve your dream of having the perfect house.
