When you give someone a gift you are in for some exposure. Normally you need for time to pass until you know if they liked the gift or not. There is more pressure when the recipient is no other then the president of the US. With her gift tucked modestly into a plastic bag, this Mount Airy resident had to sign a visitor's log in Room 45 of the Old Washington DC The package was of Little Man the president's horse and the guard was then the one in charge of finally delivering it to him.
Animal portraits are the specialty of this artist who resided in Old National Pike with her family. Upon learning art and then animal portraiture, she was able to take her love of animals and make it her business. She has become one successful artist with her business thriving immensely.
It is using pastels that she creates her masterpieces which are copies from the photographs of the animals. A lot of her horse portraits are from show photos. According to her she becomes close to many of the animals that she paints such as horses, cats, dogs, a goat, parakeets and guinea pigs. Given that she has worked with fur animals for some time she now wants to widen her experience and work with fishes and turtles with oil paints. She can make an animal look younger, or take away a defect or affliction, like eye disease.
Asking the president's wife for pictures which can be her basis for painting little man, she says she wanted to do this for some time now. Photos of the president and the horse then came as a reply from the Special Assistant to the President and Director of Correspondence after a month. With the mailed photos, her normal process was somehow disrupted. It was her habit to really go and see the animal and the owner as well and make notes on color and other things since photos sometimes like.
Yet despite not having finished the project, she was informed on the death of Little Man. She thinks that the portrait will now mean more to the president. Continuing what she had started she began dividing the portrait into four. With pastel she made an outline making sure she was able to distinguish the different tones. Then she put in color accents to the contour lines and blended them with her fingertips so that all the paper was covered.
Adding a bland background was the next stage and in this case Little Man got on in light blue. Essentially you want to portrait to at least look authentic. She has spent most of her time getting the image to resemble reality.
She made the portrait of Little Man out of her own goodness. Given that she herself loves horses, she even has her own horse which she houses in Poolesville. Her family also owns a cat, a dog and a goat Having done a portrait for the president is something that she is very happy about.
