Designed with low rolling resistance in mind, the new VancoEco van tyres from Continental Tyres reduce rolling resistance by approximately 30%; which equates to a fuel saving of around four per cent. In addition to this quite significant saving - which will be important to fleet operators - these new van tyres from Continental Tyres also enhance road safety. Indeed, Continental Tyres’ engineers have given the new VancoEco van tyres the same shorter wet and dry braking distances as a car tyre.
The potential fuel savings offered by the new VancoEco van tyres from Continental Tyres are a result of reduced rolling resistance. Moulded into a silica tread compound, the tread design reduces deformation at the point where the van tyres come into contact with the road. This feature, combined with a very shallow tyre contour, reduces rolling resistance by up to 30 per cent. However, Continental Tyres are keen to point out that fuel saving was only one priority in creating their new VancoEco van tyres.
Offering better steering, braking and wet handling, the new VancoEco van tyres from Continental Tyres incorporate a tread pattern that forms numerous small gripping edges under braking to generate a kind of “windscreen wiper effect” when braking in the wet. This enables the van tyres to penetrate the water film and allow for shorter braking distances on wet roads. A solid belt tread is also incorporated into the van tyres, which means that steering inputs are precisely transferred, enabling the driver to make fast, evasive manoeuvres and so get out of potential difficulties when unexpected obstacles appear.
Although originally developed specifically as van tyres for e.g. the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the Ford Transit and the Volkswagen T5, the VanEco range has also been approved as original equipment on the new ‘BlueEfficiency’ models in the Mercedes-Benz Viano and Vito line-ups. The VancoEco range of van tyres from Continental Tyres is produced for 15, 16 and 17-inch wheel rims in speed ratings up to ‘H’, to accommodate speeds of up to 130mph/210 km/h. A total of eight sizes are planned for introduction up to spring 2011 and these will be readily available through leading retail and distribution outlets.
