Few people will argue with the fact that acne can be a very distressing condition. For one, it is a condition that afflicts people where they are most vulnerable: that is, where they are most visible to others. So unlike other conditions where there is patient confidentiality in acne, it is there and open for everyone to see. The fact that it tends to afflict people in their teens (when they are most conscious about their looks) doesn t help matters either, as does the fact that it is a condition characterized by disfiguring pimples and blemishes – huge liabilities, at a time when society is becoming more and more image conscious.
Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to avoid falling victim to acne.
1) The first is by keeping your skin, especially in the upper body region most vulnerable to acne, dry. This is based on the fact that acne tends to afflict people with oily skin more than people with dry skin. By just keeping your skin dry, you drastically reduce your chances of falling victim to acne. Indeed, even most medications used in the treatment of acne tend to work by, among other mechanisms, keeping the skin dry (in a healthy way of course). Too oily skin makes a very good environment for acne to thrive, while a dry skin (dry in a healthy way) makes a very inhospitable environment for acne. The need for skin dryness as a measure against acne is greatest for people with naturally oily skin who happen to be in the acne high risk groups (especially in their teens or when they are expectant).
2) The second tip towards acne freedom is avoiding foods that predispose you to acne, while ensuring adequate intake of the foods that can keep one out of acne s way. The acne diet connection is no longer a matter of contention. Certain dairy products (like cheese and sherbet) have been shown to induce acne is certain people, as have certain high glycemic foods. These are best avoided by people in high risk acne categories, like teens and expectant mothers – ideally with the blessings of a doctor who can advice on better alternatives. Low levels of vitamin A and E have been linked to almost every incident of acne, so that enhancing dietary intake of those nutrients can be seen in a way as a degree immunization against acne.
3) The third tip toward acne freedom is being judicious about the skin care products you use. The connection between acne and skin care products is established beyond contention. It is in your best interest then, to avoid skin care products that have the effect of blocking the pores on the skin. The blocking of such pores tends to have the impact of keeping the hair follicles under the skin, forcing the follicles to produce the oil usually found on them inside the skin. This has the ultimate effect of causing the most unsightly form of acne, the one characterized by blackheads and whiteheads all over the skin.
