What I love about Spain is that wonderful Mediterranean blend of the ancient and modern living in harmony together and this is why I never tire of visiting mainland Spain. Never having seen the islands, however, this year I decided I would take the family to Ibiza, the smallest of the three main Balearics. With its even smaller sister island, Formentera, it is known as one of the Pine Islands, or Pityuses, because of its covering of pine trees.
The Spanish Tourist Board has gone to some pains to make Ibiza less of a clubbers’ paradise and more of a family holiday destination, so I’m looking forward to taking my brood for a safe and relaxing family holiday. I know the beaches around Ibiza are some of the cleanest in Spain and the gentle gradient of the shoreline and crystal clear waters make them ideal for families with young children.
With a new baby in our ranks, we decided to rent a villa or apartment rather than book a hotel. This would give us much more freedom to come and go at our own pace, and we won’t worry as much about other guests if the baby cries at night. Nor will we be disturbed by late- night revellers returning from the nightclubs.
We wanted to be close to the beach but that was really our only demand. With around 80 beaches fringing the island, we did not anticipate any difficulties there and we were right. There are a good number of online rental sites offering Ibiza accommodation so finding what we wanted was easier than we thought. Rental Holiday Homes had the idea apartment for us in Benirràs Bay.
Our apartment had everything we needed - and some we didn’t! For example it even had its own pool in secure private grounds, but with the beautiful blue Mediterranean beckoning from every window, this was superfluous to requirements. Its only drawback was being underneath the flight path, which, in the height of the season gets pretty noisy. The nightclubs use this as an excuse to ramp up the volume!
But nightclubs are not all that Ibiza has to offer and we are very much looking forward to soaking up some of the island’s culture and history. All around Ibiza are ancient caves and tombs dating back tens of thousands of years, including the Es Cuieram Cave and the Cova d’es Culleram, dedicated to the lunar goddess Tanit back in the third and fourth century BC. Ibiza’s many caves made the island so attractive to smugglers and pirates.
Nearby Benirràs Bay makes up part of a World Heritage Site, which makes it beautifully unspoilt and full of rustic charm. My friends are desperate to go snorkelling in the clear waters of the bay, in search of pirate treasure. We also intend to visit some of the pirate towers, which were ancient look-outs to warn the island of potential invaders.
Ibiza has a great deal to offer for such a small island and my friends and I can’t wait to get there and start enjoying our holiday. Having our own apartment will make all the difference to us, allowing us the freedom to go and go as we please without having to worry about hotel staff and dining routines.
