Often times attic space goes unused because access is either limited or is difficult to get to without pulling out a heavy ladder. Installing an attic ladder is the first step in creating usable space and turning your attic into a convenient area for storage. It is a simple do it yourself project that does not require much time and costs little. Adding steps to the attic is reasonably inexpensive and only takes about one day from beginning to end, depending on the level of expertise you have with this kind of home improvement work.

The first thing to be aware of when installing a ladder is the space available in the attic. Space saving ladders are disappearing or folding ones that takes up very little room because they simply fold into themselves and rest on top of the hatch when not in use. It is important to choose joists that will support the weight of the ladder, both when folded and when it is in use. Choose a space for it that allows easy access and will not conflict with any walls, boards, or other obstacles that are already in place so that you don't need to do any extra and unnecessary work.

Once you have chosen the location for your attic ladder, the next step is to measure and chalk the outline of the opening on the drywall. This opening should measure large enough for the steps and wide enough for an individual to pass through. It is best to chalk the outline before actually cutting as this will give you a chance to see where your steps will be before any cuts have been made. When the location and size is determined to be correct, use a reciprocating saw to cut through the drywall. After the hole has been cut, add header boards and support boards. The next step is to lift the folding ladder into the attic and use shims to put it into the exact space needed. Now that it is in place, unfold it until the hinges are extended.

If the ladder extends correctly screw the shims into place and extend it all the way to the floor. It is important that both feet be level with the floor. If they are not level, then more shims must be added or removed until the feet are even. Now that your ladder is installed you can make the most of your attic space and enjoy easy and quick access to it at anytime.
