Unlike their name, slow cookers can actually turn out to be a boon for those strapped for time. It is a big advantage for all those who prefer to have home made meals but hardly find the time or energy for it. The slow cooker not only saves on energy bills but also cooks tastier food.

How does the slow cooker work? The slow cooker cooks the food inside at pretty low temperatures. The temperature inside the cooker never reaches the boiling point. Thus there is no fear of burnt meals even when you are not around to check on it. Also the food if left longer then required does not overcook.

How does it save time? Well this is the best part. All you need to do is prepare the ingredients and put them in the pot, set the timer and heat settings and switch it on. You can do this before you leave for work in the morning. When you come back in the evening, you will have a piping hot meal ready to be served. Mmmmm.... That sounds delicious.

If you happen to be using a slow cooker with a removable pot, you can prepare the raw meal at night and leave it in the refrigerator. In the morning you just need to put the pot into the slow cooker and leave it to cook. The whole day you can look forward to a great home made meal in the evening. Plus the removable pot makes it very easy to clean too.

The slow cookers cook food slowly at low temperatures, this fact has an added advantage. You can even cook cheap meats in it and expect a succulent meal to eat.

Since these cookers cook on slow temperatures, they need less amount of energy even though they cook slowly. You can look forward to reduced energy bills. All in all the slow cooker helps you save on all fronts. You can use cheap meats, save on energy bills and reduce your take away bills too.

How to choose a slow cooker? Slow cookers are available in different sizes. The size you choose will depend on the number of people you have to cook for. A smaller pot would suffice for two to four people and a bigger one for bigger families or for party cooking. Do remember that the cooker performs best when it is over half full.

You can also choose a slow cooker depending on the heat and time settings. The cookers normally have a low and a high heat option to choose from. Though some might offer a medium heat option too, this very useful when you want to cook food fast yet retain the healthiness of the slow cooked food. The lid on the cooker keeps the condensation in and the food moist.

Some cookers also offer a timer setting, again very useful feature for those who work and would like to come home to hot meals. Another feature is the keep warm, which keep your food warm hours after it has cooked, great for parties and for those who walk in late at night.

The slow cooker is a great option to tasty and healthy meals at home. They save on time, energy and food bills. A must have for families with children and for those who like fresh home cooked meals at the end of a tiring day.
