If you thought that eye problems can only affect adults, then you are highly mistaken. Kids nowadays are exposed to a lot of situations that result in their eyes being strained beyond normal limits. Watching television, playing games or surfing the Internet for hours in front of the computer screen or even playing for hours out in the sun can affect their eyesight from an early age.
This means that they may require glasses, the right kind of glasses. You see some children are lucky enough to get away with wearing them only when they perform activities that strain their eyes such as reading, writing or playing a sport. However, others have to wear them constantly.
The Nerd Herd
A few decades back spectacles for kids were restricted to perfect circles of thick glass bordered by thick frames of black or brown. Not only did they make their eyes look like the size of fish eyes but these glasses gave them an appearance of premature aging!
This unimpressive appearance of spectacles is the main reason why a lot of kids avoided wearing glasses when they were required to. Getting bullied in glass by being called a geek is not something any child looks forward to. He or she would rather put the glasses away while in class even if it meant having to squint at the blackboard or not being able to read the words of the text book!
Children’s Eyewear Gets a Makeover
However, there is no such restriction on the look and function of a pair of kids’ spectacles. Most eyewear brands are now realizing the substantial number of children who require the use of spectacles. Therefore, they are rethinking the design of this genre of the product to suit the looks of a twelve year old kid better.
Frame
No longer does your child have to wear boring, thick glass frames with a tinge of brown or black. There are ultra light metallic frames of various thicknesses that can be found in the market to suit your child’s face. You may have plastic frames, or metallic ones. Glass frames should be avoided since kids are very active, and their spectacles may be thrown around regularly.
Lens
You can choose plastic or glass lenses, scratch proof ones and even photochromatic lenses that will protect your child’s eyes from sunlight. If your young one has high power which may result in thick lenses, you can ask for high end lenses which can be made thin even in situations of high correction.
Shape
Children’s eyewear has undergone a sea change in the past few years. The shape of your child’s pair of spectacles can range from being a full circle, oval, egg shaped, rectangular or even trapezoid; whatever suits his or her face. That way your child does not end up looking like Einstein’s side kick at eight years of age!
Wit such a wide range of choice now available for your child’s spectacles you should first let him or her try a few frames and test how each of them look on their faces. With the right choice your child will be the new popular kid in school with the coolest pair of glasses!
