Alcoholism is a specific term for someone who is very much addicted or dependent on alcohol.

Alcoholism can create a number of adverse side effects on the addicted individual at the physical, psychological, and social level. Alcoholism is a major cause of family dysfunction, including domestic violence and child abuse. Addiction can cause serious, long-term consequences including problems with physical and mental health, relationships, employment and the criminal justice system. Addiction can cause an intense craving for drugs or alcohol. Addiction is a chronic illness like heart disease, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

Addiction is viewed as a chronic disease or illness like diabetes, asthma or hypertension. Addiction is viewed as a relationship of sorts. Addiction is a problem that many people face. Addiction is a serious problem that many people are faced with in the world today. Addiction is a complex problem that affects every aspect of your life.

Alcoholism not only results in negative life-changing consequences, but also is extremely addictive physically as well as psychologically. Alcoholism is defined as any individual regardless of frequency, amount, or duration who will continue in spite if these consequences. Alcoholism is estimated to cause 100,000 excess deaths annually. Alcoholism may cause relapse in depressed patients and contributes to the course of the depressive illness.

Alcoholism may be deemed a genetic disease, but it is still an individual’s choice to drink or not to drink. Alcoholism is a progressive, deadly disease, and the longer one is alive the stronger the disease gets.
