You might well be wondering if low cost tyres are a myth, what with all the fuss surrounding winter tyres at the moment. In fact you might well ask if winter tyres could ever be low cost tyres. After all, aren't they an expensive extra that mean you need to buy extra wheels and find somewhere to store them in the summer, as well as paying to have them changed over every six months. On top of that, surely they won't be as cheap as a lot of bargain or discounted tyres. They don't sound like low cost tyres do they?
Well the truth is that winter tyres can be low cost tyres under certain circumstances, and some tyre and vehicle manufacturers have been getting together to set up joint promotions which can be competitively priced. However winter tyres really can become low cost tyres in the area of road safety and accident prevention. Indeed it's a proven fact that they're much safer than ordinary tyres, whether these are low cost tyres or premium tyres, whenever the temperature is at or below seven degrees Celsius.
So the potential cost savings that enable winter tyres to be seen as low cost tyres, can arise as a result of the savings in car repairs, loss of no claims bonuses and additional time off work caused by injuries. And this is of course quite apart from the tragedies that may be caused and the hidden costs to society of hospital treatment. Looked at from this point of view, even expensive tyres can be seen as low cost tyres when you considert the overall savings that can be made between mid November and late March.
But whatever you save on winter tyres, can they really be low cost tyres, when insurance companies have actually been charging extra premiums for winter tyres, simply because they represent a change from the car manufacturer's original specification? Many industry commentators have raised concerns about this issue and it is expected that insurance companies will come to recognize the many benefits so don't give up immediately in your search for low cost tyres because there are bargains to be had.
And in fact there's no reason why low cost tyres can't be good quality summer or all-season tyres either. They don't have to be low quality imports of doubtful origin, because you can often buy premium quality low cost tyres that are offered at discounted prices when retailers want to clear stock for example. So if you're prepared to plan ahead, bide your time and look out for a bargain, there's no doubt that with the sheer number of retailers competing for your money there will be some low cost tyres for you.
