Iconic Apple leader Steve Jobs is on indefinite medical leave. He was the "Apple" of the eye for Apple and with his absence there are chances that the company might just lose some magic. But the larger question is what if Jobs does not come back from leave? It is imagining the unthinkable, but what would it imply if we hypothetically think of such a situation?
A job-less Apple would maybe lose its Midas touch, though Tim Cook undoubtedly will do a spectacular job. But Steve Jobs was one man who struck where it hurt the most(in a positive way of course). He was the emperor of product timing as he identified market needs like none of his executive counterparts.
So what if he did not return? What shall Apple look like in the future? Let us break-up into definite time spans and make an interesting analysis.
6 months after Jobs left Tim Cook is headng Apple but there hasn't been any apparent change in the firm. Things are the same where its products are a hit in the market. The iPad 2 and a new 4G version of the iPhone are out as per plans. The company is on a financial high but gradually executive swaps and poaching starts to creep in, atleast rumors begin to spread.
A year passes and Jobs hasn't come back to Apple but Tim Cook is still very successful but the corporate structure of Apple begins to change. As poaching continues Apple's separate unit heads like the iPad and Mac begin to emerge to become more popular. Rivals begin to steal employees from Apple and start to expand rapidly. Though Apple's earnings remain intact.
No sign of Jobs and it has been 2 years therefore Apple begins to lose its ardent consumer base which it had once enjoyed under Steve Jobs leadership. Basically Apple's brand equity begins to reduce though its sales increase as cheaper lower end versions of iPhone and MacBooks are made available to the market by Tim Cook.
Five years pass but Jobs hasn't come back so now Apple begins to foray into new areas such as cloud computing and industry specific products. It also launches an advanced product like the tablet PC beyond the reach of the average customer who still prefers the older Apple products. The newly launched device definitely lacks mass appeal.
10 years Jobs isn't coming back and slowly Google and Facebook are becoming priority for customers; Apple sees a setback as its high end products carry less appeal to the consumer. But Apple retains its status as the world's best developer of consumer and enterprise technology. The only thing which blots Apple's image is its inability to combat rivals on production of user friendly products like content and networks.
This is just an assumption, a figment of the imagination. But the idea definitely has some reasoning. Though the entire world would definitely want Steve Jobs, back on the Apple job as soon as possible. Wishing him all the good health!
