When it comes to common plumbing repairs at your home, the replacement of pipes (copper or PVC) is one of the easiest task to undertake. A broken PVC pipe leads to excess wastage of water which in turn shows in your monthly water bills.

Whether the cracks on the PVC pipes are wide or not, the affected length of the pipe has to be replaced immediately. This is because the PVC pipes are bound to crack more easily than their copper counterpart.

Start off the campaign by arranging all the necessary plumbing tools that you would need during the project. The tools such as pipe wrenches, screwdrivers, a roll of Teflon tape, a pair of channel lock pliers, a sealant compound etc. have to be incorporated in the regular scheme of things.

Before the commencement of the project, turn off the main water supply from the water control valve. Once water supply is cut off, move to the project site and observe the crack in the PVC pipe. With the help of tape, mark down the position on either side of the crack from where the pipe is supposed to be removed. Keep a margin of about six inches on both sides of the crack while marking down.

Make sure that a large bucket or a container is placed underneath the pipe in order to collect the water dripping during the operation. A rag or a towel can also be tied just below the pipe to absorb any residual water.

Grab a hack saw and start cutting the pipe from the defined mark. Drain down the water from the pipe to the bucket/container and move to the other end of the pipe. Cut it in a similar way such that a particular length of pipe is dissociated from the fixture. Take the dissociated pipe to a local hardware store and demand a similar length of the pipe. Also the width of the new pipe must be absolutely similar to that of the old one. Buy a set of couplings that would serve the purpose of holding the new PVC pipe to the old fixture.

Dry off the edges of the pipe to connect the couplings and apply a bit of sealant on the fixture. Let the sealant bind well to the setup. Next insert the new length into the couplings and again apply a liberal amount of sealant on both the ends of the pipe.

Call a professional to handle the complications involved in the project.
