Real jogging strollers are three wheel strollers built specifically for running. Many other strollers have a three wheel design but are not built solely for running. They are known as all terrain strollers and are meant for everyday use. The Phil and Ted models (Vibe, Dash, Sport) and the Mountain Buggy Urban are typical three wheel all terrain strollers.) All terrain strollers often have a swivel front wheel that can rotate in order to weave through crowded areas. The swivel has a locking feature to enable the wheel to be fixed in a forward locked position for straight running and tracking. These models usually have thicker, heavier, off road tires, and stronger shock absorption systems to allow for even rolling over rough surfaces and bumpy sidewalks.
Strollers with smaller wheels, and umbrella style strollers are not designed for running. They are better suited for strolling, mall use, and everyday getting around.
The following design features differentiate three wheel models them from standard strollers:
1. A stiff, welded metal (usually aluminium) frame for strength and durability
2. A light weight aluminium frame to reduce pushing effort
3. A fixed front wheel for straight tracking at high speeds
4. At least 16 inch or 20 inch sized wheels for an easy push and smooth gliding
5. Air filled pneumatic tires for smooth rolling
6. An adjustable handlebar for short and tall parents
7. Shock absorbers and suspension systems for a smooth ride
8. Sling style seats (with only moderate back support) to reduce weight
9. A Five Point harness (attaching at the hips, crotch, and shoulders) to secure children for extra safety
10. A fully extendable canopy for sun protection
Wheels
Larger wheels (16 to 20 ) are more appropriate for running, jogging, or rough uneven surfaces. While larger wheels provide a smoother ride, they make the stroller bulky and harder to store. Smaller wheels (12 ) are inappropriate for jogging. Fixed front wheels are the best choice for serious runners, but swivel wheels that lock out are also acceptable for lighter running. Swivel wheels are best where maneuverability is important: crowded sidewalks and narrow store aisles.
Colour
Even though fashion may seem important, you want a stroller with light coloured fabric that will not absorb and trap heat when you are out on hot days. Given that babies can over heat rapidly, it is important that the interior of the stroller remain cool. Light coloured strollers are also easier to see if parents are running at dawn or dusk
Seat
A stroller seat should provide adequate back support for toddlers, and should recline to a flat position for infants and babies. All seats should be well padded and have a 5 point harness to secure the child. Seats on true jogging strollers are sling style and usually provide only adequate support.
Handlebars
Handlebars should be ergonomically designed, padded, and adjustable for parents, and caregivers of different heights.
The Bob Ironman, Baby Jogger Performance, and Chariot CX are the popular, high end, true jogging strollers. However, there are many acceptable mid priced models. For example, the Pacific Cycle company manufactures the jogging stroller Schwinn line.
