Whenever I drive with my mom, I try not to talk too much, especially if my brother or someone else is in the car. The same goes for my boyfriend and his mother. As it turns out, they both get really distracted when there are other people in the car. Perhaps this is because they feel the need to pay more attention to them? Whatever the case may be, they aren t the only ones who are like this. In fact, there are many people who become distracted easily.
If you look at all of the gadgets that you can purchase with your vehicle in addition to all of the gadgets that your vehicle already comes with, it is absolutely mind boggling. It is also nothing short of a miracle that there aren t significantly more accidents reported because of it. Not that long ago, my boyfriend purchased a portable GPS device because he is horrible at directions. The device is pretty neat because all you have to do apparently is plug in the address that you are looking for, and the GPS determines where you are in relation to your end point, and it gives you audible turn by turn directions for how to get there. The audible feature is great because it prevents you from having to look at the dvice while driving, allowing you to maintain a hands free posture. But there is still a part of me that feels as if GPS devices are just another distraction. After all, I have witnessed several occasions where the GPS failed to work accurately, and my boyfriend had to balance trying to fix the GPS device with driving his car (which is a stick shift).
The same thing goes for ipods and other sources of music. Having an attachment that allows you to play an mp3 device on your car stereo system is really neat. However, this doesn t stop you from hearing a song and wanting to switch it to a different song. If you had a cd player or cassette player in your car, this isn t as bad as having an mp3 device because now you definitely have to look at your mp3 player and scroll through hundreds of songs to find the one that you wanted to listen to in the first place. It is incredibly dangerous. If you are planning on plugging your mp3 player into your car, there are ways that you can avoid having to constantly look down dragging your attention away from the road. For starters, create separate play lists within your I pod. Make sure that you put songs on these play lists that you know you will listen to all the way through. If worse comes to worse, you will just have to sit through the songs that you chose to put on there at least until you have come to a complete stop.
In places such as Raleigh, NC, there is a lot of new construction going on on the roadways which has caused entire lanes to disappear or merge into one lane (temporarily). This means that you need to be especially careful with your driving. I will often tell my boyfriend that if we stop to get fast food and I m driving, I will have to pull in somewhere to eat the food before proceeding. The reason for this is because I don t feel comfortable eating and driving because eating requires the use of at least one of your hands.
