It can be a challenge for some people to look for nannies for hire that they can trust enough to leave with your child. You can feel more secure by doing one or more of the following: hire a nanny through a good agency that follows the standards for nannies and agencies, such as the International Nanny Association and the Alliance of Professional Nanny Agencies; hire a nanny who went through a training program, and the American Council of Nanny Schools sets the standards for this; and ask from friends and colleagues who were able to hire a nanny before and see if they can recommend someone who worked for them before.
Always make sure that you check the references and interview the person thoroughly. If possible have a trial run before you hire the person completely. This way, you, your child and the nanny will first see if you'll be comfortable working together. Compensation should also be discussed: is it a per-hour, per-day, or per-week payment? Will the nanny have benefits, incentives, raises or perks?
You may also want to know the definitions for the term. The International Nanny Association use more specific terms for nannies, such as: nursery nurse, baby-sitter, au pair, and nanny.
A Nursery Nurse is a person who has special training and preparation to care for young children, either within the home or outside of it. The person can work independently and responsibly on everything that is related to caring for the children. The title is used in Great Britain and the person must have passed the British certification examination of the Nursery Nurse Examination Board (NNEB). The baby-sitter is a person who provides supervisory or custodial care for children, either on a part- or full-time basis. This can include another child in your neighborhood who can take care of your child or an older neighbor. Au Pair is a term used for a foreign national in the United States who has up to a year of experience in the country. The person lives as part of the family and receives a small payment for baby-sitting and perhaps help with the child's homework. It can be a formal or informal work. Lastly, nanny applies to a person who was employed for child care and other domestic tasks in the same field. The nanny can be on live-in or a live-out basis. The definition for child care, according to National Association of Nannies, includes emotional, social, and cognitive development.
