There are thousands of lawyers out there and it's hard to choose the right lawyer to help you deal with legal issues and the like. To help you find the right lawyer, here are some tips:
Skills. The right lawyer must have the skills so he can help in resolving your issues. Learning from textbooks is good but not enough. Skills are not only learned from textbooks but from the lawyer's practical experiences too. Usually, countries have a principal organization where lawyers can register. These organizations have websites allowing you to search lawyers according to their skills or expertise and even their locations.
Location. If you need a lawyer for minor reasons like buying a house, doing business, preparing a Will and others, you should find a lawyer who's closer to your residence or work. It would really be tiring to travel for hours just to consult a lawyer on petty issues.
But if your issues are complicated (such as tax, employment or franchising issues), then go travel and find the right lawyer who can help you. By doing so, you can save more money and stress in no time. But with the advent of technology, you can already brief a lawyer through telephone, facsimile and emails. This way, you save time, gas, money and stress!
Charges. Wherever you may go, you need to pay your lawyer. Governing bodies to which lawyers are registered to have been setting rules by which lawyers have to divulge to their clients on how they charge their fees.
Availability. You also need to determine if your chosen lawyer is available to help you resolve your issues. It's best for you to test your lawyer if he really is available to help you. Try leaving a message, sending an email or a fax and determine how long it takes him to respond. Generally, lawyers can reply the same business day you sent the message; if not the secretary can send his message instead. Remember, emails are better because it's quicker and easier. On the other hand, if your lawyer is on the phone all day, or is having lunch with a higher paying client or is saying will get back to you later but has not done so, he isn't the right one. It certainly means he can't help you with your problems!
