The microwave oven was discovered during some research that Dr. Percy Spencer was completing in'46. The radar related project was testing the use of a magnetron, and he noticed that a candy bar had melted during testing. That caused him to move on and try some popcorn, places kernels close to the tube.
The next morning he and an assistant would try placing an egg next to the tube. As they closely watched the egg started to shake and tremor. The assistant trying to get a better look moved in closer only to have the egg explode all over him. It was then that they knew they had something great!
Dr. Spencer would then make a metal box that he would place around the tube. This was when he noticed how much more energy would be inside the box. These steps are what would become what is well over a multimillion dollar idea. The first microwave oven that came out was an amazing 5 and a half feet tall and weighed more than 750 pounds. The cost of that first microwave was $5000!
It was shortly after that the first commercial microwave would be produced. It would be an amazing 750 pounds and stand at five and a half feet tall. The cost of this item would be $5, 000. It was something that many people even larger businesses weren't too thrilled about spending money on. Plus the fact that you would need a plumbing hook up to help keep that internal tube cooled didn't help out much.
While the first home microwave, named the radarange would come out during the same year. It wasn't near as big, but the cost was close enough. Coming in at $2, 000 to $3, 000 if you wanted to buy one of these new items. Of course it was new and many people would buy them. Thankfully during the years prices and sizes of those microwaves have gone down a lot.
If you head out to look for a microwave oven now a days you will find small appliances that are used by most people. It's a lot easier to purchase a microwave for a college student. Plus many families will actually use the microwave ovens quite often too.
Comparing those prices is a must when you are planning on buying a new microwave. Of course you can look at used ones too, as long as you get to test them out to make sure they are working. Though you may want to ask about a warranty of some type even on those used models that you consider. Just in case you take it home and a week later it stops working, you would have lost whatever amount of money you paid.
