With the economy down in the dumps, the prospects in most fields of study is looking pretty grim. If you are a student or recent graduate in some of the most common career choices like law then your prospects does not look that great. There is a low demand and a high "supply" of fresh graduates and even experienced people who cannot find work. If you are looking for a career change or even if you are looking to start a career that has great prospects then a career in Radiology might be perfect for you.

Once you are qualified you can expect to start on a salary between $40,000 and $75,000 depending on your qualification. Most professions in the field requires a 1 to 4 year qualification but if you want to become a fully qualified Radiologist it will take you 8 years of full time study.

The demand for qualified staff in Radiology is pretty consistent across the board. Currently there is a big shortage of trained individuals and this demand is set to increase over the next 6 years as the technology keeps expanding and more and more medical fields start relying on x-ray technology in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This is also one of the most exiting prospects in the field.

In recent years human imaging has been responsible for some of the biggest medical breakthroughs. Doctors rely heavily on x-rays, MRI's and Ultra Sound technology to help them in diagnosing and treating many different diseases. The technology is improving daily and as a technician you will be required to stay up to date with this technology. Its also expanding into new territories and computer technology is starting to also play a big part now.

While the majority of job opportunities is with hospitals, there is a growing demand in the private sector. Working in a private practice can be a much more relaxed and personal atmosphere and many people prefer that to the high stress environment of a hospital. There is a also a growing demand for trained x ray technicians in laboratories and research facilities and if this is something that interests you then the opportunity is there.

Unlike most careers you will never grow stale. The constant need to further your education makes it very challenging and exciting. With some exciting new technologies being introduced, radiology is set to become an even more exciting career in medicine.
