If you want to look into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a method to get in shape or to learn how to defend yourself, fantastic idea! You're moving in the correct way. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, frequently known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu is offshoot of the Japanese fighting system of Jiu Jitsu, which when adapted to English means "Gentle Way". The combat form is referred to as the gentle way on account of of it's toned down emphasis on punching, kicking and more forms of striking and in lieu its participants rely on using leverage and a little basic awareness of anatomy to subdue or (if necessary) injure an opponent.

As a result of this more gentle way of fighting, it is feasible for many normal people of all ages, sizes and backgrounds to participate in this very effective martial art. One doesn't have to be super quick, powerful, or big to be able to defend yourself using BJJ. Furthermore, due to the gentle way of mixing it up, very frequently you are able to "spar" with a companion in brazilian jiu jitsu with 100% of the rate of motion and capacity you would in a real world scenario--without being injured! Think about trying to put on a pair of mma gloves with a sparring partner and punching each other with full power. One of you would most likely be knocked out sooner or later (or at least a little messed up!)

If you're trying to get started in BJJ, you will need to identify a trustworthy dojo to train with. Currently if you're based in a major hub in the U.S. this probably will not be an issue. Over the last dozen or so years, many of Brasil's greatest practicioners of the sport have moved stateside to teach. They have been churning out top quality students that are not only qualified to teach the martial art, but many have become standouts on the competition circuit worldwide. A lot of these practicioners have gone on to start their own dojos throughout the U.S. (and the world). Most professors in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will post their belt rank as well as their lineage on their blog. Heritage in this case means where they and (their teachers) attained their ranks from, all the way back to the founders of the art form. In most big cities now you can probably find at minimum one black belt in Brazilan Jiu Jitsu. However in pint-sized cities, you might only be able to disover a brown belt or a purple belt. Nonetheless, don't fear if that's the circumstance. A brown belt or a purple belt is still a considerable conquest and usually needs hundreds of hours of preparation. After you've found a reputable school and you're prepared to give it a go, follow these steps in advance of you get in the gym.

Find a time frame for the beginner's course.
Get cleaned up and trim your finger nails.
Dress in befitting sports clothes.
Be polite to anybody that you roll with and keep their personal safety as well as yours.

Following your initial class you'll probably be hooked once you see how powerful and effective Gracie Jiu Jitsu can be! You'll want to invest in one (or several) Jiu Jitsu Gi in order to train a few times a week! Just continue drilling as often as humanly possible! wishing you the best with your development of knowledge!
