If you're in an area that is receiving particularly bad satellite signal with your television, then there are a number of potential problems that could be causing it. Firstly, if you are not already using a digital signal, then the analogue reception that you are receiving could be being disrupted. This is also going to be a big problem as the Digital Switchover is due to take place in 2012, meaning the analogue signal will no longer work throughout the UK, so upgrades have to be made as soon as possible ideally to avoid this.
If you are already using a digital signal then there could still be a number of issues. Firstly, are you using an indoor portable aerial? Although some homes can get a great reception and receive most available channels using a portable aerial, there are still some issues found with the reliability and overall quality found from using portable aerials – particularly problematic if you are using Sky or FreeSat, where portable aerials will simply have very little affect.
There are two solutions to problems being found with an indoor aerial. The most ideal one is to use an external aerial or satellite dish outside of your house, which is pointing at the most ideal location (you can use a signal finder to judge the most opportune point). If you are unable to use an outside aerial/dish, then a secondary solution would be to place an aerial within the loft of your building, which again points in the best direction to receive the signal. Loft aerials are a good middle ground, as it means the signal will be received through the roof structure, meaning there is no wall insulation and brick walls for the signal to be interrupted by.
Although externalising the satellite or aerial usually fixes a lot of potential signal issues that people experience with television setups, problems may still arise. Weather conditions for one, can be particularly if you're in an area that experiences a lot of wind or snowy weather. Obstructions can also have a big affect on signal performance. Your aerial signal may be being interrupted by large objects that are breaking up the quality, such as trees or other buildings that may be in the direction in which the signal is coming from.
Obviously with elements such as objects in the way of the signal, there are limited solutions to improve the quality of the signal, so you may be in a bit of a rut. You can, however, improve signal quality by protecting your externalised dish/aerial/receiver with regular check-ups (just as you would any other piece of equipment should it be potentially faulty), and you can also re-position or re-fit the item to a different part of the building if there is a need to.
If you are having signal issues, need a new aerial installing or simply need advice regarding a potential solution to a satellite related issue, then you should consult an expert where necessary. Although satellite and digital issues can largely be plug-and-play in most situations, there are potential problems that could arise, and it's better to be safe in the hands of an expert.
