Don't you remember, a long time ago, when it was likely to feel like you were keeping your home clean and getting away from all of the pollution on the planet just by staying inside your house and keeping the doors and windows closed? When you're in your own house, you get to control the quality of the air you breathe. Or can you really? The simple truth is that there are a lot of toxins that can wind up in the air of your house and raise the risk of your contracting asthma and respiratory issues. Part of this is because our houses are becoming more air tight-we have much better windows and seals in an attempt to minimize heating and cooling costs. Of course, saving electricity is what is making the air inside our houses harder on our lungs. Keep reading to learn what you can do to make it easier for you to breathe in your home.

Take your shoes and boots off outdoors, if possible. If you cannot do that, leave them in the front entry way of your place. When you walk around out of your house--even in indoor areas like hospitals and shopping centers, your boots and shoes pick things up. In addition to dirt and dust, your sneakers get a tiny layer of mold, bacteria and various chemicals on the bottom of them. When you walk into your place with your footwear on, you bring in this stuff and it gets into the floors and carpets. It then gets kicked up anytime there is action. This means that, instead of staying in the floor, it becomes kicked back up into the air and you wind up breathing it in. If you take off your footwear outside the house or in the entry way of your home, you reduce this risk by leaps and bounds.

Do not get your dry cleaning right away. Let it stay at the cleaner's for a few days. Apparel which has just been dry cleaned is saturated with chemicals that are incredibly harmful. Some of those substances have been known to trigger neurological damage and cancer. You need to make sure that the clothes are totally dry before you take them home. If the clothing hasn't yet dried all the way, you run the chance of both breathing in those chemicals and transmitting them onto your skin. It's also advisable to work with a dry cleaner that uses the newer, non-toxic and ecological dry cleaning tactics.

Keep your property ventilated! We know that you put in those new windows because you wanted better control over your home's temperature. At the same time, leaving the house windows closed constantly requires you to continue breathing all of the crap that gets kicked up every day. The dust mites which get kicked up whenever you dust and vacuum can't escape. The smoke and fumes that penetrate the house when you cook on the stove or with your oven don't ever dissipate. Your shower's steam can seep directly into your walls which can cause mold to form which you then breathe in and get sick from. Your fans should get started. Open up your windows. Give the kicked up stuff a chance to break free.

There are many ways to make your home healthier. Don't forget: coming home does not mean that you physically close out the world's problems (literally). Take some measures to make the house a pollution free zone.
