Vacations were much easier to prepare before having a family. At that time, it was only two people and the alternatives appeared open-ended and the logistics less complicated. You could choose anywhere for a romantic weekend getaway determined by its seclusion and warmth. You could pick a location far away and exotic just because you had not been there before. Possibly your own favorite was to go on long hiking and camping trips with low levels of gear. Even if your vacation organizing was something apart from this, what ever that selection used to look like before having a spouse and children compared to now trying to prepare a family vacation, it's a different task now.
Now there are further issues to think about when traveling and arranging a family vacation. Depending on the age and number of your children there is a good deal of gear that either has to be carried with you on the trip or rented at your destination. If you are traveling with infants or toddlers, there are considerations about automobile seats and strollers. For the other young ones, there is the problem of trying to keep them occupied and not making you crazy or destroying something in their quest for something to do. For older children, it is usually somewhat easier to control them in the car, train, or aircraft, but once the final destination is arrived at, then they will want something to do that is fun and that also gives them some independence.
After considering the child's needs, there is still the consideration of the parents (and other adults if along for the trip) who will be seeking a nice combination of family time as a group while still looking to have some alone time as well to remind them of what their pre family vacations where like. We all need to reminisce and remember the good old days. Sometimes parents will discount their own goals in vacation planning to defer to something entertaining for the little ones, although the ideal plan would take both factors into equal consideration.
Balancing all the competing demands and desires of the family members to arrive at a family vacation plan that makes all people satisfied or at least relatively content is not always an easy task, and is why family vacation planning can be a a lot more complicated task than expected. Not only that, but because there are monetary factors to consider, certain options that would make everyone happy aren't available as viable options simply because they aren't affordable.
If there are budget constraints, driving for 14 hours with a vehicle full of people also requires its own sort of planning for how everybody will stay occupied during the driving portion of the trip.
These are just some of the factors facing households as they try to select the top vacation location for them to get the best experience possible and make the best memories. There are lots of choices to make in this process. Make a best effort at communicating and coordinating and choose to find the best vacation spot for your family.
