More than just a handy office tool, deskside shredders are quickly becoming a necessity in today s world. Identity theft and corporate espionage are just two reasons that any employees of yours who have the need to destroy confidential information on a regular basis should have a shredder in a convenient place, and ready to use when they need it. Here we are going to take a look at Destroyit s entry into the deskside shredder market, the Destroyit 2260, and list some of the machine s advantages and disadvantages.

Pros:

1. We liked how the Destroyit 2260 starts and stops automatically with the use of a photocell that senses when the user is putting paper into the feed. There is also a multifunction switch that contains a small light denoting whether the machine is in standby, stop or reverse. We found this to be a nice little feature on an entry level shredder.

2. Safety is always an issue when you are using a shredder, and to that end, the Destroyit 2260 has a transparent shield in the paper feed opening that keeps hands, fingers, and neckties out of the cutting mechanism. We were thinking this was a great and very important, especially for deskside shredders, where you might not always be looking at your hands. Also, the machine cuts off immediately when the shred bin is removed from the cabinet, and when the shredder head is lifted from the bin. All nice safety features.

3. Noise is always a consideration when you are shopping for a shredder, and we found that, for such a powerful little shredder, the 2260 ran pretty quietly. This is, of course, a big plus in a crowded office, or if the machine will be used often.

4. The cutting shafts appear to be of a very high quality, and they accepted paper clips and staples without any problems.

5. The 5 gallon bin is not a bad capacity for a smaller shredder. What we liked most, though, was the cool green opaque window which allows user to see how full the bin is, and that the removable design would seem to eliminate the need for plastic shred bags. Less plastic means more green.

6. The Destroyit 2260 comes in a solid, high quality wooden casing that we thought was pretty classy.

Cons:

1. With no handles or casters, the Destroyit 2260 is not as easy to move about the office as it might be.

2. While we like how the machine stops when the bin is opened, some of Destroyit s other models come with a function that does the same when the bin is too full. While perhaps the presence of the viewing window makes this feature not as necessary, we still think it would have been nice to have included this feature.

3. While the 2260 boasts of having double overheating protection, we would like to have a clearer idea of how long the machine can be used before it needs a cooling down period. While the 2260 never seemed to come close to overheating during our tests, it would be nice to know how long we can typically use it.

Recommendation:

For a single use deskside shredder, the Destroyit 2260 has some pretty nice features and measures up pretty well to competing shredders on the market.
