These days many kids and grownups even, are taking keen interest in cartoon drawing. There are various reasons behind this trend first and foremost is obviously proliferation of cartoon channels. The beautiful cartoon shows telecasted by these channels are attracting people of all ages. Collecting picture of heroes of those shows, drawing those figures becomes natural thing to follow.

There are both good and bad part of this. Good thing is that more and more youngsters are getting attracted to the popular art form that has the ability to enhance analytic and creative faculties of their mind. On the other hand what is happening, youngsters are starting in the field of cartoon drawing without learning the basics of drawing. True in many schools basic drawing lessons are given as a part of course work but that is hardly enough to make a kid ready for creating cartoon figures.

As a result of this many young enthusiasts find cartoon making quite daunting. Because, in most cases, even after considerable number of efforts, they fail to draw something satisfactory. But this situation can be changed: my advice to cartoon lovers would be if you find the thought of making beautiful cartoon interesting, do not start with cartoon figure drawing. Instead learn the basics first. Follow a well established course.
In this article I will talk of how you can draw smooth lines. As a budding cartoon maker line drawing should be your first lesson because whatever drawing you see in TV or in comic books all consist of lines: controlled and smooth straight and curve lines.

1. Select your pencil and paper wisely. You should check that your pencil moves over the paper smoothly. If it does not you will have difficult time to draw.

Your best bet will be a HB grade pencil. And the paper you will be using should not be too thick or too thin because in both such cases your pencil will not have free flow motion. And avoid using uneven surface for placing the paper.

2. Ensure the lead of the pencil is only contact you make with the paper. That is to say that you should not rest your wrist on the paper as you do while writing. If you place your wrist on the paper then you will have hard time to keep the line smooth.

3. Take a piece of rough paper before you start your final drawing and make some circular or elliptical shapes on the rough paper. This way your brain will have the feeling of the pencil and paper's interaction. And your finger muscles will also get a good warm up session before the final show.

4. When drawing a line joining two points with a straight line look towards the end point of the line that is the destination of your pencil's lead. This simple trick will help to keep the line straight.

These are few simple tips that you can make use of every day if you want to draw beautiful cartoons. If possible get a good drawing book try to follow the lessons provided there. Bottom line is you should try to cover the basics before starting complex drawings.
