Shivratri is the moment when Shiva takes a relax. Shiva rests for one 'prahar' of the night. This night 'prahar' is known as the day Shivratri. When Lord Shiva takes rest, the act of 'Shivtatva' ceases. Lord Shiva goes into a pondering state. Shiva's pondering state is the time when he is engrossed in His peculiar saintly practice. What better time to be joyful than mahashivratri? It's the time of the year the world awaits with much anticipation. People send lots of mahashivratri SMS on this day. During that time, the 'Shivtatva'

does not endure any tamogun or any halahal coming from the earth. Mahashivratri is one of the major festivals for noble Shiva devotees, who spend the day and the whole night fasting and chanting mantras to please the god.

Mahashivaratri is celebrated generally in the temples of noble Shiva in every part of India. Shivratri festival mainly celebrated at all the twelve Jyotirlings shrines in the countryside.

These Jyotirlings are at Somnath in Gujrat, Mallikarjuna in Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Bhimashankar in Maharastra, Trimbakeshwar at Nashik in Maharastra, Kashi Vishwanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Nageshvara at Dwarka in Gujrat, Ramalingeswarar at Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, Grishneshwar at Aurangabad district in Maharastra and Vaidyanath at Deogarh in Jharkhand.

On the day of Shivratri or Mahashivratri devotees observe fast for the complete daytime and night and pour milk, Ganga water, bael leaves, cannabies on the Shivalingam in the temples. The night elongated merriment of Mahashivaratri includes cultural programs, rudra homa, prayers to Lord Shiva. On this divine nighttime of Shivaratri, particular request blessings and darshan at all the Shiva temples in India, Nepal and Mauritius. In some places, marriage rituals of noble Shiva and idol are also pragmatic on the godly nighttime of Mahashivratri. On the favorable daytime of Mahashivaratri 2010 people are sending Shivaratri SMS, Shivaratri messages, Shivaratri greetings to each other.
