Going back as far as I can remember, which is probably right around the grade school years, the clothing that I have worn out in public has meant a lot when it comes to the image that I want to convey. We all go through the awkward stages of feeling like an outcast or the weird guy, but to a certain extent we use our sense of fashion to help to get us through. By simply knowing how to dress, knowing what looks good with what - picking the right color to go with the right color, and even the right fabric to match up with other fabrics - it mean the difference between a busted up reject of an outfit or one that's a hit with your classmates, your friends or your coworkers.
It doesn't take a lot of effort to pull together a look that works for you; all you have to do is just a little bit of planning, and give it a little bit of thought, and sit back and watch the outfit come together for you. The simplest way of putting together an outfit that's going to be nice and cool for everyday wear. It starts with your choice of either your head or your feet. If hip-hop here is your thing, this means picking out either a nice cap or a nice pair of sneakers as a base for your outfit.
When picking out that foundation piece, think about the mood that you are in, and the mood that you want to project and then think about the colors associated with each. As many of us have learned from that old 70s throwback, the magical mystical mood ring, colors project a certain attitude and certain feelings. When you wear bright colors they signify a cheery and light mood - with a dash of confidence to top it off. When you wear darker colors - let's say grays and browns - you actually project a rather depressed and dour mood. And with this projection of moods, for some reason what we project is what we actually become. When we project outward confidence and a sense of surety, we actually become more confident, and when you project a down mood from darker colors you take that on as well. Have you ever had a morning when the sun was shining brightly into your bedroom window when you woke up in the morning? With the sun shining and the skies looking nice and blue, your mood is going to be much better than if you woke up only to find the gray skies and rain.
So take a lot of care in picking out your color schemes, because they will set the tone for your day. Now back to the cap or sneakers: after you've picked out a nice cap or pair of sneakers that have the foundation colors for your outfit, you're ready to work out the details of the rest of the outfit. If you're starting with the cap and working your way down, you might want to lay the cap at the head of your bed - using your bed as a sort of a horizontal manikin. Work your way down to the shirt, jersey or sweater that you will be wearing, being careful to keep it simple. You don't want to overmatch every thing that you have on to the point that you look like a little child, but you also want to be careful not to look like a rainbow as well. The best way to find that comfortable middle ground is to choose one or two colors from the cap and use those as a base for the rest of the outfit.
Moving on down to your choice of pants, slacks (heaven forbid), denims, sweats, etc.; these should really be more of a backdrop for the entire outfit not standing out much, but providing a more subtle accent piece for the rest of the pieces that you're wearing. If you're wearing a dark cap and light shirt, you probably want to stick with a darker pair of pants to provide a little bit of contrast, while your sneakers will provide the finishing touch of color - preferably with a light color or set of colors that match your cap to a certain degree.
