One of the most important aspects that you need to realize about donors is that most of them do it out of the sheer reason behind the donating (to give). However, it still is important that you really recognize these people, companies, businesses or organizations to show your appreciation for what they have done. One of the best ways to go about something like this, is choosing a recognition that has been done for hundreds of years - donor walls and donor plaques.

These are walls, plaques or other objects that you can place inside your organization or even outside, which is going to recognize those that have given to your organization. I would say that this is one of the more popular ways of giving gratitude for something that someone has done, but it's not the ONLY thing that should be done when showing your appreciation, here I have listed a few more guidelines you should follow when it comes to recognizing or thanking your donors.

Donor Walls/Donor Plaques: Since these are the most popular ways of going about a "thank you" I'll list these first. These are plaques or walls that emblazoned with platinum, silver or bronze material that is etched with the donors name, business organization, how much they donated, etc. It's a good idea to ask the person or business what they would have on the plaque or the wall since some people really wish to remain anonymous. You have so many different options when it comes to these donor walls and donor plaques; everything from plain plaques to Tree of Life designs, to really fancy designs like glass panels, photo-murals, and historic images.

Thank-you note: Get everyone involved in your organization to write a thank-you note TO the person that donated. This will include any employees or staff members along with the higher ups include board members the CEO of the organization, etc. Most people want to help, but they simply don't know how to show recognition. In this case, it's a good idea to meet with your board of members and let them know about a few simple ideas that they can do! Most of them will be completely willing to send out a thank you card, letter or note!

Scheduled event or dinner: Try to schedule a gala, hosted party, or some kind of an event to show your appreciation for all of the donors (not just one or two). It doesn't matter how much they have donated - everyone should be shown they are appreciated! Another thing you could do is tell your donors before hand that if they donate a specific amount of money, they will be highlighted during a speech done by the business as a show of their recognition. Usually this will result in higher donations as well so it's a win-win.

You can also do other "thank you" options as well such as thank you baskets or phone calls and make sure you personalize the call and use the person's name, how much they donated, etc. let them know that you really appreciate their gift! These guidelines aren't to only thank the donors for what they have already given, but it also helps when it comes to those donors donating again the future because they will truly see that they are appreciated and that you will recognize their donations!
