If you watch TV, browse the web, or visit a grocery store, you have to know about the hundreds of brands that are marketed as diet food. They may be low calorie, low carbohydrate, low fat, or low salt. We can buy so many types of "LITE" food, but we are still trying to beat a big weight problem. Do any of these types of food actually help.
What types of food really help for weight control?
I think that a lot of people could trim their wastes by sticking to a simple diet plan.
For instance, the CDC suggests that a 40 year old woman who excercises less than 30 minutes a day should have 2 1/2 cups of vegetables and 1 1/2 cup of fruit a day. Do you actually eat this much fruit and vegetables?
See, sometimes a healthy diet does not mean you have to actually eat less food. Sometimes you just have to eat more of the right type of food! And many diet experts suggest that dieters should eat more fruit and vegetables. Studies back this up, but I think that simple common sense would suggest that few people have ever gotten obese from adding an extra salad or bowl of grapes to their diet.
See, these are high water content food. You get lots of healthy nutrients like minerals, vitamins, fiber, and water. Our appetites get satisfied, so we don't feel like we need to eat more later.
If you can treat the fruit and vegetable portion of you meal as the main course, and the breads and protein portion as the side dish, you could go along ways towards satisfying your cravings while eating a lot less in the end.
Does this focus on high water content food work?
Scientists have performed studies with groups of normal weight people who did not appear to have an eating disorder. They made 2 types of pasta. One of the recipes just had pasta, meat, sauce, and cheese. The second type had a liberal sprinkling of diced vegetables which reduced the calorie count of a serving.
They allowed the people to take as much pasta as they wanted. What they found is that people tended to give themselves a serving based upon the weight of the food. When they had the "vegetable" sauce days, people took about the same amount, but ate less calories!
Smoothies, made the right way, can help dieters. This recipe has helped a lot of people curb their late nigh cravings. Take a half cup of ice, half a cup of low fat milk or yogurt, and a piece of fruit. Blend it all up in your blender, and enjoy!
If you have trouble digesting dairy products, you could try some fruit juice or soy milk instead of the milk or yogurt.
This is a very healthy snack for most people, and because of the ice, it takes awhile to drink. I have found that it also tends to be filling and reduce cravings for other types of foods. Just make sure you have a blender that can handle crushing ice, because I have found that task is hard on some cheaper ones.
Lots of dieters have developed their own diet foods that work for them. A cup of hot tea or low fat hot chocolate can be satisfying and reduce cravings for sweets or fat. A cup of fruit, topped with yogurt or cream, can be delicious.
